Adding Second Ac with Ac Prep

Hi floridarandy,

Welcome to the Heartland Owners Forum and hopefully to the family. We have great bunch of people here with lots of information and all willing to share their knowledge if needed.

To install the 2nd a/c,, you remove the vent, clean roof area and get some help to get the new unit on the roof. The wiring is close by, just need to hook it up and turn it on. Most all the 2nd units are not controlled by a thermostat mounted on the wall, it will be built into the unit with a temp knob. Just make sure your breakers are off or unhooked from shore power.

Enjoy the forum.

thanks jim...a few followups:

1. i assume ducting to bedroom remains so original a/c can continue to cool/heat this area
2. does original (2009) factory air unit typically have heat strip/heat pump?
3. is fan that is being replaced securied to roof with screws or other fastners from the top? bottom? if so do these holes need to be sealed?
4. i assume there's some type of wood blocking around the opening? does new a/c unit need some type of fastener to this blocking (screws, etc) is a seal of some type needed?
5. i assume this will add height to overall unit due to the location of the vent? any idea how much (must vary with unit i assume so just a ballpark?)

thanks again

That is correct.
2. does original (2009) factory air unit typically have heat strip/heat pump?
No
3. is fan that is being replaced secured to roof with screws or other fasteners from the top? bottom? if so do these holes need to be sealed?
The fan is fastened with screws. You will need to clean off the butyl caulk as best possible.
The gasket on the new A/C unit should cover and seal the holes.
4. i assume there's some type of wood blocking around the opening? does new a/c unit need some type of fastener to this blocking (screws, etc) is a seal of some type needed?
The opening for the A/C is framed in. The new A/C has a large foam rubber gasket. This
gasket is compressed to seal when four bolts are tightened from the inside.
5. i assume this will add height to overall unit due to the location of the vent? any idea how much (must vary with unit i assume so just a ballpark?)
It may add a couple of inches to your overall height. Depending on how level your rig rides and where on the roof your present A/C is located.

I installed a second A/C on our last rig. The hardest part was cleaning the old caulk from the old fan I took out.

Peace

1. Yes, original ducting remains intact
2. They heat strip is an option but I've heard recently they are having trouble with heat strips on certain models of a/c units.
3. The existing fan is secured by screws from the top. The caulk that covers them will need to be carefully removed.
4. The existing opening is already framed for the new a/c if your rig has been prepped by the factory. The new a/c is two pieces, inner & outer and are secured to each other through the roof with long bolts. There is also a gasket that seals the opening. It's all included in the package
5. If a low profile unit is installed, the height will not increase.
As a side note, some newer units may have a t'stat that may be wired or wireless. When mine was done, wires for the t'stat were in place because we had a fantastic fan in the bedroom and used the wires from it's thermostat.

if a Sundance has 50 AMP service then they are pre-wired and for the 2nd AC. All you would need to do is have your dealer install it for you.

Thanks,
