Bumper fell off?

Saw this on Facebook, owner claims bumper "fell off". When asked if he carried bikes, he said yes but not the trip it fell off. This is on a 2014 Mallard. Thoughts?

Not being an expert, it looks like possibly metal fatigue. From the photo, it looks like the welds held, as there is still metal from the bumper there.

Look at how thin the metal is..that's not what I would call a bumper. Not uncommon these things were made to haul a sewer hose, nothing else. The welds look like they held but the metal tore off around them. Don

One hypothesis; stress cracks allowed moisture to enter, rust did the rest. It' s interesting how the owner stated he hauled the "bikes"' but not on that trip when the bumper fell off. Humm, like the guy who smokes, and had a heart attack, but is confused because he didn't have a cigarette that day.

There is a good chance they didn't have bikes but still had the bike carrier on there. The bumper was probably coming apart before that

Yeah, no pictures of the bumper!!

Probably because they don't know where it fell off . . . and most likely didn't go back to find it.

Although the clue should be when suddenly nobody is passing you and the traffic is hanging about 1/2 a mile behind you.

When I transport our bikes, I use a Swagman hitch carrier on the truck (after we've taken the trailer north). Just seeing how it bounces with two bikes on it tells me his thin sewer hose carrier got flexed repeatedly until the metal gave out. Just because they sell things to mount on those hose carriers, doesn't mean they're OK.

I agree they are more of a sewer hose carrier than a bumper. Probably used to have thicker walls back in the day.
