Credit Card Fraud

We arrived at Southern Oaks, Aransas Pass Texas..it is 81 degrees out and hot... Went to pay our bill only to find that our credit card was declined. WHAT I SAID!!!! .... I called Chase and only to find that they thought something was suspicious on the activity and froze it. This had happened to us once before with Chase and they are really good about suspicious activity, also so is Wells Fargo...
Someone hacked us and charged a lot and of course we are not responsible for it and they closed the account and are re-issuing us new cards. So now... I will spend the rest of the day changing my passwords and checking my bank accounts. So my dear friends, watch your credit cards closely.. I was advised to change my passwords about every 3 month. Credit Card fraud is getting bad out there. The couple ahead of us had the same thing happen to them yesterday.

When you say you were hacked, what did they hack. Your bank account, or did they take your credit card? Do you have any idea when your information was taken and how.

I had Wells Fargo contact us on day two of a long trailer trip from Texas to Colorado, because they noticed "unusual activity". They called to tell us they had some charges showing up, that they were concerned about: "Someone was stopping every 200 miles, moving away from your hometown, and spending 70-80 dollars on your credit card each time. We wanted to make sure you have your card in your possession." I said, "Why, yes, that's us, we're pulling our 5th wheel, and have to fill up with diesel about every 200 miles!" We had a good laugh, and all was well. I thanked them for checking on us!

Same situation with our Chase BP Card. They haven't called this season yet but probably because they may have a comment on our file about seasonal travel??? I usually don't worry too much about hacking but more so about those places I have to leave the card with an attendant while I pump fuel at the truck lanes. I won't do that any more though. I just figure how much I'll need and pay in advance.
I also check my card accounts on line frequently and balance our checking account on line frequently. Just for peace of mind.

I have had my card ripped off by a waiter in a restaurant with one of those black boxes, CC company picked up on it, no charge. Usually when I fill up, I end in the same two numbers as my check on CC account. When leaving the country on a trip, CC company is notified. We usually don't fuel up at Hess because you usually can not pay at pump. If we have to leave card to fuel, DW stands there watching. What a shame we all have to be so carefully. What's needed is more enforcement and jail time.

While on the road this summer, we had a few stations where we couldn't use the card at the pump. The demanded I leave the card with them while I filled up. I told them that "you don't trust me to pay you, why should I trust you with my card?" Fortunately I didn't have the 5er hooked up at the time, and I went to a different station to refuel. Some friends told us that she will stand at the counter with the card in hand while he fills up. So far it's worked for them, and we are going to start doing that.

This subject has been brought up before. We travel fulltime and only use a credit card for our purchases. I have a 45gal Aux tank in the bed so I fill up whenever I am not connected to the trailer. When I need a lot of fuel I pull out a spare credit card I keep in the truck and leave it with the clerk. When I am finished fueling I go back into the station and take back the spare card and give them my main card. I then ask the clerk for their name and I write it on the back of the receipt. I then tell them thank you and mentioned that the first card is my bait card in case a station clerk uses the card I know when I last used it and who I gave it to.

You should see the looks I get. So far no one has stolen my cc number. Now in a restaurant I just have to be careful and I do keep a close watch on the charges to my account.

Yep, was a victim of identity theft last week. Someone was using our Wells Fargo credit card to place phoney ads in papers and sales sheets for a Porsche. What they would do then is take a down payment from a prospected buyer before he even saw the vehicle and when they went to look at the car it was a bogus address. The ad company called me and alerted me to this one. Does anyone use any fraud monitoring companies and if so which are good? ie "LifeLock"

Here is what we do, when asked to leave our cc...I pretty much know how much fuel I'll need..So, I leave the clerk with a $100.00 bill (truck can't hold that much, so I'm covered) and tell the clerk I'm going to pay with a cc when through fueling...
Works for me.

Perfect and I always use cash in restaurants. I have a rider on my House policy with Farmers that covers me for protection up to 1M.
