Def

Where is the best place to buy DEF. I have read to check the date but I don't seem to see it on the 2.5 gal containers in the box I have seen. I have only had to fill once and I bought it at a auto part store. I really like my truck but I don't like where Chevy put the fill cap-I wish my truck told me how full it is but it does not. Thanks for the info.

I bought some at Rural King, $9.99 for 2.5 gal. I agree I don't like where they put the fill opening, I just got my truck and they had spilled DEF in the engine compartment so I made them clean it up. That stuff would be hard on finishes etc. I do love my new ride though. One other thought, some truck stops are now handling it with a nozzle right at the pumps so no handling the 2.5 gal jugs.

I usually get the 2.5 gal jugs at O'Reilly's. A few months ago I filled up at a Flying J location with a bulk DEF dispenser - I think it was about $2.70/gal. The dispensing hose was a little short for reaching across the engine compartment on my GMC, but the price is right.

It is getting so you can find DEF almost anywhere. Wal-Mart sells it, many convenience stores sell it, car dealers and auto parts stores sell it. I have bought both a 1 gallon and 2 1/2 gal containers from our local Ford dealer. Wal-Mart sells the 2 1/2 gal container and us the same brand that is sold at Flying J.

I usually get it at the local Ford Dealer at around 13.00 bucks, but be careful because now they started charging a few bucks for the fill nozzle that used to be free (I had kept my old one so it didn't affect my price).

I have been filling my 2012 F350 with DEF when the info system shows 1/2, adding 2 1/2 container. Last container would not fit into tank. So what I do now is wait about 200 miles after showing 1/2 fill to get the whole container into the truck. I also buy at Walmart, they always seem to have a container while traveling. I read somewhere that it is not good to carry an extra container over a period of time, I don't know why.

It has a shelf life. There is a date on every jug. It's life is degraded in hot weather, and it can freeze. I believe that freezing is not a problem though.

JUST (as in a few hours ago) got my 2012 3500 Dmax CC Dually..... And reading the book it appears you get your first warning when there's about 600 miles left in the DEF tank. That should be enough warning no? Yes, I looked at the filler location and my 1 foot flex tube funnel is definitely the tool for the job there.

Some of the pump dispensers use a magnetic adapter that fits into you tank and allows DEF to flow. Helps eliminate adding DEF to your diesel tank. Many trucks have the DEF right next to the fuel filler. I have heard that some truck stops have an adapter behind the counter for lending or you can buy your own.
Locally, the Walmart doesn't carry DEF, but while traveling I have always found it at wally world.
All of our local parts stores carry it and only mini9mal quantities, so it is always fresh.

About a 1 year shelf life and subject to breakdown from heat and sunlight. I never buy more then 2 at a time. I have gone as far as the "200 miles to" and was not able to get 2 full jugs in, The Ford's are rated at holding 5 gallons.
