Hot water heater light don't work on 120 v

I have a new gateway 3650 and the hot water heater seems to work on propane but when I switch the switch on the control panel to 120 the light don't work. I'm assuming it's not working based on the light not lighting up. Any thoughts to what could be the issue. I'm new to the camping world so any help would be appreciated. Thank you

Hi Pdecrescenszo,

Congratulations on the new Gateway and welcome to the Heartland Owners Forum. There's lots of useful information here along with a great bunch of friendly and helpful people.

On some models, there's a separate wall-type light switch for the electric operation. When turned on, the switch illuminates. If that's what you have, I'd suggest you check the circuit breakers to see if it's tripped. Actually flip the breaker off and back on. Sometimes when they trip, they only move slightly and it's not obvious they've tripped.

If that's ok, check outside. Take off the water heater cover and look in the lower-left corner to see if there's a rocker switch. Suburban water heaters have that and it is a secondary switch that protects the water heater from being turned on before there's water in the tank.

There are usually two ways to run the water heater. Propane and 120 volts. They are separate circuits and can run at the same time if you want to really get the water heated fast. You indicated that propane is working. Propane only requires 12 volts to run and can run off your batteries. Have you checked the breaker? If the breaker is set then I would see if you are getting power to the switch. You can get a simple circuit tester at Home Depot that will check this. The circuit is pretty simple and it should be pretty easy to find out if it is the circuit (breaker or bad connection) or do you have a bad switch.

Check that outside switch before buying anything. Unless the dealer turned it on during their PDI, it's a good bet it's OFF. But if the element was turned on before there was enough water in the tank to immerse it, the element is likely shot. The light indicates the circuit is closed.
