What a big decision to make on a traveling companion. We have 2 toy poodles. Four years ago we bought BamBam from a breeder who I work with. Great dog who at the age of 4 months traveled to the Rockies and back. He gets so excited when I start loading and hooking up the camper. Nugget is a rescue toy. He was somehow at the animal shelter but was micro chipped with the same breeder's info who called us and asked if we would take him on. He's a much older poodle and hasn't learned about traveling yet but hopefully that will come with time. So - we have done both - bought and rescued.
