Refer with Ice Maker

Does anyone have this option? We are looking at a Bighorn on the lot that does and if I had way
I'd rather not have it. Just one more thing to give us trouble and you don't want trouble with the
refer.
I was wondering what your sucess has been with it?

Hi, Westwind. We have a '06 3600RL Bighorn with the 2 door frig. It came with an ice make, but we never used it. Dometic told me mold may quickly form if the frig is turned off for any number of days and not dried out. That makes sense in hot humid weather. There are numerous postings on the forum describing the issues and leaks with the ice maker. However, there are also posts explaining the fix and telling of success using the ice maker. We took our unit our of the frig and gained more shelf space. I plugged the holes with a plumbers putty type of product, and have had no problems. We also purchased a free standing ice maker at a big box store, took out the stove, put a stove top in, and built a cabinet with a pull out shelf where the oven was located. The ice maker fits nicely in the space occupied by the oven. It was also easy to put a 110 outlet in the new cabinet. Power was near by to splice off. If I would get a new unit with an ice maker it would be gone before I took delivery. I do not understand why Dometic does not give a choice of ice maker or no ice maker, or do they give the choice. I would not let an ice maker stop me from making a good deal. Ask the dealer to take it out and seal up the holes as a deal maker. Good luck with your decision.

We have it. I like it, but could just as easily live with old fashioned ice cube trays. DW thinks it takes up way too much freezer space. They are easy enough to remove, so I wouldn't let it be the determining factor if you love the rig otherwise.

We have it and don't like it. Takes up too much room in the fridg. It is a pain to winterize. I disconnected mine. Now use a portable ice maker. Cubes in nine minutes.

A lot depends on what size refer you are looking at. We have the 13 cubic foot 4 door with the ice maker and love it. Plenty of room in the freezer compartment for it. If we had the 8 or 9 cubic foot refer I would rather have the freezer space and use a portable ice maker. That is what we did in our last rig.

Peace
Dave

We have 9 cuft (2 door) and I removed the ice maker for more freezer space. I use the "ice cube bags" to save on space over the ice cube trays --> Amazon Ice Cube bags

We are weekend/holiday campers right now so only need the freezer to store frozen stuff for short trips - when we change to anytimers I suspect we'll get a small chest freezer.

Take care,
Brian

I learned tonight it's a Dometic and you folks told me I could remove it if I wanted more freezer space, I did think of the winterizing also which I wasn't excited about. I like the
idea of a separate Ice Maker. Again thanks for the postings.

Bought the Bighorn 3070 yesterday so we will learn to live with it or end up removing it. Probably live with it since I'm at the age
where I don't look for work, just deal with what comes along.

Ask the dealer to remove it for you before you take delivery.

Take care,

4 door refer. Ice maker works great. But, its a pain to winterize. When we are boon docking we dont like to use the fresh water tank for ice and drinking. When in AZ for 3 months we get a free bag of ice with 30 pack. Havent hooked up the ice maker since the first winterize.

Same here. Always had trouble with it. Removed it for more freezer space and use a portable that works great. Fast ice and lots of it.

Now that I know it can be removed I will just deal with whatever happens, I was reading how to winterize it since in my neck of the woods that's a must,
usually right around Thanksgiving or a little before.
