RV Park near Rapid City

Welcome to the Heartland Owners Forum. There's a lot of useful information here and other owners will reach out pretty quickly to offer help and advice.

You'll probably get a bunch of recommendations pretty quickly.

J-Bar Rafter is very nice. A bit pricey, but very nice. We'd stay there again.

We have stayed in a few places over there. How close to Rapid city and when? I don't know of any places open this time of year but you could check with some local dealers. They may know of something.

We've stayed at Heartland Campground in Hermosa. It's about 11 miles south of Rapid City. They honor a lot of discount plans: Escapees, Passport America, Good Sam, etc. Not fancy but very affordable. It's also close to one of the highways into Custer State Park and Mount Rushmore.

In August, 2012, we stayed in Broken Arrow Campground in Custer about 30 miles south of Rapid City. Close to Custer SP, Iron Mountain and Mount Rushmore. Check out RV Park Reviews of this campground. It is very quiet, beautiful views, level pull thru sites, and welcoming friendly staff. Custer is a friendly town to explore.

I agree with Dan.
Rafter J Bar is a great campground in Hill City. A short drive from Rapid City.
Very nice sites and surroundings.

We are going to Custer in June and will be staying at Custer's Gulch RV park. The site of Custer's Base camp.

You can purchase the 2013 Good Sam RV Travel Guide & Campground Directory at Camping World for only $9.95 which is rather large but lists each state broken down by city and all campgrounds, Fed, State, and Private and gives a good review on each. Looking at my copy there are the followings Good Sam Parks:

There are also several more listed that are not part of the Good Sam system (Fed, State parks and private campgrounds) as well as a couple of KOA's in the area (near Mt. Rushmore and in Deadwood). WOW twotoes about covered all the campgrounds in and around the Black Hills of SD. We stayed at Rafter J Bar Ranch in Hill City and would go back. Nice family owned campground.

Another vote for Rafter J! It's a very nice, spread-out, lots-to-do, family-oriented park. We stayed there in June, 2012, just before the HL Rally, thanks to recommendations on this forum.

Would have to vote for the Rafter J Bar. If possible ask for a site in the Island Loop all have FHU and very large back in sites. We have been going up the for the last 10 years and love it. Depending on your time if over any of the summer holidays they may already be booked.

This past summer we stayed at the Rush No More RV Resort & Campground nice place great owners

We stayed at Crooked Creek last June after the national. Smaller than Rafter Bar J, mature trees over the sites, good cheap breakfast fixed for campers by the park at cheap prices most mornings, cute little stream running through, and very dog friendly. There is even a bike trail running along the back of the park that runs for several miles in either direction.

We enjoyed our time there and would return without hesitation.

We stayed at Custer's Gulch and really enjoyed it. It is very close to the state park and close enough to the area attractions for an easy drive.

Another vote for Custers Gulch. It is close to all the attractions. Crazy Horse, Mt. Rushmore, iron Mountain road, Needles Highway (hwy87), Wildlife Loop, Peter Norbeck National Scenic ByWay and have you ever driven through a herd of Bison (Buffalo for the tourists)? BTW Iron Mountain Road is the one where you drive through the tunnels and weave in and out of the close hills. A "have to do trip".


Go to Crazy Horse later in the evening, park in the front row of the parking lot then go walk through the shops until it starts to get dark. Then go set in your truck and watch a great Laser show against the Crazy Horse monument.
