Harrysandysrig, welcome to the forum.
Is this rig new to you or have you had it for a while?
We used to have a 2008 3400RL. Nice coach.
Have you looked under the slide for anything broke or out of place? Did the slide open and close properly before?
About the only thing I can think of is if the endcaps for the slide mechanism are broken, but I doubt that.
It really sounds like you need an adjustment.
There are instructions for doing that in the WIKI located at the top of this page.
Come back and let us know what you find out.

Peace
Dave

Neither the WiKi or the HOC Tools has this manual (at least I couldn't find it), which shows how to make horizontal and vertical adjustments to the slide. You might want to inspect all of the bolts/nuts to look for any evidence of shifting or movement, including the gear tracks.

At least as a temporary fix, you can measure the inside dimension needed and wedge a couple of lengths of 2X4 to lay on the top of the slide roof to keep it in while traveling. You should have it inspected for broken brackets at the outer end of the slide rams. Hopefully it's just an adjustment but new bolts & nuts might be needed due to the age of the rig. Mine is an 07 and all of the adjustment bolts are seized up.

On our kitchen slide we had the same issue and after a lot of attempts to fix it we finally discovered that the slide out awning had become too tightly wound and so it was loosen off. Problem solved.

Had same issue with our desk/fireplace slide....when out it was not flush with inside top/wall (several inches of a gap). Called dealer and they wanted us to bring it in. They went under slide and adjusted the mechanics of slide. We had Bighorn for about a year or so & everything was fine for that period of time...the mechanic @ dealership said that it does happen every now & then: a slide needs to be readjusted. The manual also said it should only be done by a qualified mechanic/dealership for Heartland.

Been there done that. I agree with the suggestion that you need to have your dealer look at it. You will save yourself a TON of time and frustration if you do.

After Hurricane Katrina we had to have our coach repaired. They had the bedroom slide out and when it came back to us, it was leaking. The seal wasn't tight across the top when it closed. We figured since the dealer was the one that screwed it up in the first place it wasn't going back there!! So, we spent the next 6 months trying to get it fixed. Finally got it but what a pain!!!!

If you do attempt to work on this yourself one thing to remember is that everything tends to work the OPPOSITE of what you expect. As an example, if the top of the slide is not tight when you close the slide, I would be looking at the BOTTOM of the slide to adjust the tilt of the TOP back towards the coach...LOL

Like I said...if you can at all, take it to your dealer!!!!
