Stinky water

Hi BigCountryfan,

Welcome to the Heartland Owners Forum and family. We have a great bunch of folks here with lots of information and all willing to share their knowledge when needed.

I assume your talking about when you drain your tanks. All the tanks will have some smell, usually not as bad as the black tank and if your draining into a pipe without a screw in or donut fitting to seal the pipe,, you will get smell there also.

Hopefully some of the other folks will jump in soon.

Enjoy the forum.

There was a discussion some time ago about bacteria in the water heater emitting hydrogen sulfide into the heated water. That's the rotten egg smell. If your water heater anode rod is covered with a white slime, you have bacteria in the water. Cleaning your anode rod and tank, along with using a water filtering system may help. Seems to be a problem with untreated well water in some areas.

BigCountryfan,

Welcome to the Heartland Owners Club and to the Heartland Family!

If you have gotten the bacteria in your system, you should just replace the anode rode completely and flush your entire system with a bleach/water mixture of 1/2 gallon into your holding tank full of fresh filtered water. Then run the water from your fresh water holding tank though every line, faucet, hot water heater (turned off), and drain in your entire system, allowing each one to run at last 2 gallons of water through them (don't forget the outside shower) using the hot water side (remember, hot water heater is off) for a few gallons and the cold water side for a few gallons. Once you have run it through each faucet and hose in your entire system, let it sit for 12 hours before completely draining and flushing your system with filtered fresh water. Flush out your fresh water holding tank 4 times with fresh water and each time allowing a couple of gallons of the fresh water from the tank to cycle through each faucet in your system. Then drain your hot water heater and refill it. After doing that, as long as you are using filtered water, then your system should be clear and clean. If you need to purchase a filtration system the folks at RV Water Filter Store have great prices and can help you pick out the filter system for your rig that will fulfill your needs.

On a separate note, if you are able to attend (I know this is last minute), we have the Washington State Heartland Owners Club Rally on the 26th - 28th in Monitor (Leavenworth/Wenatchee). We would love to meet you and have you attend the rally. If you have any questions feel free to PM me.

A lot of well water across the country is high in SRB (sulfate reducing bacteria) when heated the rotten egg odor as noted in earlier post will drive you out of the shower. Don't use that water unless it is the only source available. If you have to use it then chlorination and a charcoal filter following that will remove the odor. The sanitization procedure outlined earlier will help. Some antifreeze will give you a similar odor if you didn't get it flushed out adequately.

We also had a rotten egg smell coming from our faucets earlier this spring. What we found out is the antifreeze did not drain from the washer/dryer faucets (we do not have a washer but had winterized the entire system) and had soured in the warming weather. Our coach is one of the ones without the outside low drain points so draining this area is difficult. We now know its a must no matter how hard it is to drain.
