Any recommendations on a route and camping facilities for a trip from Phoenix, AZ to Carlsbad, NM. Will probably stay one night in the El Paso, TX area on the way and several nights in Carlsbad NM sightseeing. Will be towing a 34' BigHorn with a Ram DRW. Any suggestions and prior experiences will be appreciated.

Carlsbad KOA is pretty nice if you are looking for a RV park. It is very hot this time of year and there is not a lot of shade so be careful if you go hiking. We like to go there in fall when the weather cools off. Spring is way to windy.

We usually stay at Brantley Lake State Park. Water and electric hookups. It is about 12 mi north of Carlsbad.

In Las Cruces the Hacienda rv park is nice but is for mainly 55+ so not great for kids. If you want one for kids then the KOA is OK but not as nice as the Carlsbad KOA. Hacienda rv park is near the old part of town and has a lot of things to do within walking distance or a short drive.

55+ will work fine. Thanks for the info.

We stayed at Brantley State Park also and really enjoyed it. Nice sites overlooking resevoir and very quiet.( Carlsbad was very bustling! )That was in May, lots of wildflowers etc. That being said, it's quite a haul to the actual caverns. We went twice, once to see bats in the evening and again the next day to hike down into the cavern. IIRC, it was about 45 minutes each way to/from Brantley. Depending on what you plan to do in the area, that may or may not be worth it to make that drive. We opted to stay out there because we didn't hear the greatest things about RV parks in Carlsbad.

Thanks Bamps. Did you have any issues with the electrical service at Brantley? The site information lists 20/30 amp service.
