Water Heater "Flameouts"

Hello out there. We are brand new travel trailer owners and have a question about our Atwood water heater. I kept hearing our water heater propane flame "flaming out" as it heated the water. I watched the burner flame appear and disappear a number of times. The water does become hot, but what's the deal with the flame coming and going? Is that normal? It was like the igniter having to keep reigniting the propane gas.

Hi martinbd,

Welcome to the Heartland Owners Forum. There's lots of useful information here along with a great bunch of friendly and helpful people.

The flame start and stop is probably due to either poor propane flow or an airflow obstruction. Some insects, particularly spiders, like propane and will create a partial blockage around the gas valve. Also check the air intake for mud daubers or other obstructions.
