Working with Solid Surfice countertops

I am in the process of installing an induction cooktop in our 3010. I have removed the gas cooktop/stove combination and am in the process of sizing up to cut the opening a little larger fore to aft to accommodate the drop in unit I have purchased.

There will be a gap towards the backsplash and in front of the new cooktop. I have purchased a piece of “my” countertop material from Heartland. Simply asked them if I could purchase the cutout from someone else’s stove. The cost was $35 and it is exactly what I asked for.

At least on my unit there is a scalloped out area where the stove unit sits in the countertop and my plan is simply to cut and drop the piece in (it is the same thickness of my scallop) from what I bought after cutting it to size. Since the edges on my countertop are rounded it won’t be an exact fit…..but I figure I can fill it with epoxy…..and maybe even drop in some saw dust from my cuts to help with a match.

My question centers on
if anyone else has done this with their countertops…..tried to “glue” a piece in or epoxy a “crack”. Maybe not in an RV….but you might have some experience from your home kitchen project.

I have found an epoxy whose color matches my top and they seem to indicate one just simply sands it down after the epoxy sets….using 200 – 400 grit sandpaper. My lack of experience in finishes is only outdone by lack of plumbing ability….so I am also curious if anyone has “polished” up their countertops in this fashion…..AND DOES IT REALLY LOOK GOOD AS NEW?

I plan on playing with my scrap piece since it is way more than I need….but thought I would reach out and see if anyone has some experience they want to tell me about or an epoxy product they have used.

I am more concerned about making a flat good looking surface again at the join…..not so worried about strength. Since there is a step down in the current hole this will help hold the new piece in place and I plan on bracing with 2 by 2's from below.

Thanks in advance,

If the epoxy does not work, an Acrylic or pvc cement will bond two pieces of solid surface materials.
