Forest River Tops Towable Market Share for First Time in 10 Years

When Elkhart, Ind.-based Forest River took the lead for highest market share in consolidated towables at 35.5 percent in July, it was the first time in more than 10 ½ years that the RV manufacturer has claimed the first place position instead of Thor, according to Tom Walworth of Statistical Surveys Inc.
“Looking back since 2003, this is the first time Forest River has come out on top of Thor (in terms of consolidated towables),” Walworth said. “July is when it turned.”

Thor, which came in a close second with 35.1 percent market share, also came in second in Class A and C motorhome market share, with a 24.6 percent market share compared to Forest River’s 25.5 percent market share.

Forest River has held the top position in market share over Thor for the motorized division — excluding Class B’s — for nine of the past 11 years, Walworth said.

The difference in total number of units between the Forest River and Thor on the year is 429, Walworth said. Forest River has retailed 53,643, while Thor has retailed 53,214.

Walworth said the competition has always been close, with jumps seen when either corporation acquires a company. The two control close to 65 percent of the entire industry’s market, he said.

“I think both companies have been very aggressive in marketing product,” Walworth said. “The cup has gone to Forest River for the time being. They’re both very competitive and they both build great products.”

It's easy to sell more units when they are priced so much lower. But our last camper was a forest river. And yes, it is cheaper, but it was obvious by the quality of the workmanship.

Selling and producing more does not a better product make.

"The Oracle of Omaha" finally gets the bragging rights he's been trying to buy in the RV marketplace.
