Considering a new Big Horn

I sold my previous 5th wheel (a Jayco Designer) and we are considering purchasing a new BH 3070 RL. Options I have asked for include the 6 pint leveling system, dual pane windows, Goodyear G-rated tires, and 12.75 X 3.75 brakes with EZ lube axles. I pull with a 2005 F-250 with the 6.0 diesel that is equiped with Firestone air bags in the rear.

I would like to hear the experience others have had with the BH leveling system. Also, does anyone recommend ordering the MorRyde hitch? We want a camper that we can use for travel as well as extended stays (up to a couple of months). Any thoughts or suggestions will be appreciated. Thanks.

Hi TNRon,

Welcome to the Heartland Owners Forum and hopefully the family. We have a great bunch of people here with lots of information and all willing to share their knowledge if needed.

I think your on the right track with the options you posted. I'm sure some of out other owners will jump in with their opinions also.

Enjoy the forum.

I think the Air Ride Hitches are worth every penny. This is our first fifth wheel with one and I love it. Sure does make a much nicer ride.

Welcome to the HOF. The BH 3070 RL combined with your F250 should be a safe towing rig. As for the MorRyde, many use them and they do what they are designed to do. The product that I use and it works very well for me and it is a step up from the MorRyde is the Trail Air Tri Glide Air Ride Pin Box.

We have the MorRyde and it works well. I can't compare to the Trail Air, but I'm satisfied with the MorRyde. If you want a bike rack, you'll have to request it when you place the order. I havn't heard of any success in adding the rack later and keeping the frame warranty.

You might want to go for the 7,000 pound axles since you went with the G rated tires. The cost is around $460.

We love ours. Suggestions, if you plan on doing lots of travel you might consider the power cord reel, love ours and will never have a unit w/o it. Also, if you plan to spend much time in the south you will want the 2nd A/C. The level up is the best option we have, LOVE IT!! Took a while to figure it out during a 4 month/8,000 mile trip last summer. Once I finally got it figured out it was great!

Thanks. Have you had any trouble with your leveling system? If it works well, I think it will be worth the money. We do plan on getting the cord reel, and we are considering the second a/c and some kind of pin box upgrade (MorRyde, etc.)... and maybe the 7000 lb axles.

Love our Mor/Ryde pinbox and yes to the 7K axles. I didn't think that HL would install a Mor/Ryde pinbox. I bought mine from Tweety's in Texas. Was $599.00 and free shipping.

According to HL's website, a MorRyde Hitch is shown as an option for the Big Horn, but is not shown as an option for the Big Country.

I have the four point level up system as a factory option on my 2012 Bighorn 3185 purchased in May 2011. I really like it and it works very well. I guess if you only park at decent campgrounds you wouldn't have the opportunity to really appreciate it. I boondock at some music festivals and also "camp" at the in-laws yard and side to side leveling is quite necessary. This system makes it a breeze and I am sipping on a beer in nothing flat. Heck, I even appreciate it in my driveway when loading or cleaning pre and post trips and when I have company that I prefer stay "outside!".

We are about to buy a 2012 Big Horn 3610 RE. We really like the extra large shower because we are big people ;-) What is the difference between a Big Horn and Landmark? Are they about the same? We are also test driving all the available diesel 3/4 ton trucks out there. Any advice??? Thanks, Red

If you need a truck anyway I would consider a 1 ton. The 3/4 ton may be enough for a 3610 but if you end up with a Landmark or larger Bighorn (now or in the future) you may end up over your legal limits. As the old saying goes "better to have it and not need it, than need it and not have it." Good luck with your search.

We toured the Heartland plant in Indiana where Big Horns and Landmarks were made. As far as we could see from the inside out, they are the same quality, but have some added luxury appointments available. We ordered our Big Horn because we like the 3055RL specific floor plan best, and overall length, and Heartland let us add some off-sheet options like the upgraded tires and axles, Yeti pkg, bike rack, MorRyde, Fantastic Fan in Bathroom, as well of course most of the on-sheet items.

P.S. - Your unit may come standard with the 7000 lb axles as the axles and frame size is determined by the GVWR for your particular unit, but upgraded axles and tires are probable avaiable for the 3610 too.

We have spent days and hours. Just came home form RV show with information overload. We have selected the Bighorn 3610. Have not ordered yet. Now we need to decide on extras. We are going to get the 6 point leveling system. But want to know about whether we should get a generator or not. Anyone out there have them?? Do you use them. Those without, do you wish you had one??

What about Washing machines and dryers. Do you find it easier to use the RV park facilities or use the set up in the RV? Does anyone have one of those combo washer/dryer in one machine? Do you like it better than traditional stacked.

Any other extras that you think we should get at time of ordering???

About the truck, we are getting a 3/4 ton diesel. We are stuck with the issues 2x2 or 4x4 and standard vs long bed?? Any thoughts or opinions would be greatly appreciated.

I'll comment on a couple of things, Level-up is a must have, I carry a 3K Honda generator always, but seldomly use it. I would also order slide toppers. As for the truck, buy a F-350 or a 3500 you won't be sorry and you won't be over weight. One time on wet grass you'll be glad you have 4x4, my last 4 trucks have been short beds, this time I went back to a long bed. Nicer ride and a bigger fuel tank made me happy I did so. JON

Since you are in Texas I would recommend a second AC unit in the bedroom.
I would also give some thought to the dual pane windows.
I agree with Jon on everything he said.
