WooooooHoooooooo..... The building arrived today, 9468.9 lbs of it. I have stuff scattered over about a half acre doing inventory and laying stuff out.
I couldn't wait until tomorrow to start putting things up so I have 7 of the posts bolted to the concrete now and put a couple girts in place...
I'm tuned it to prices in ND right now. Prices on everything has gone sky high up there. Been thinking of advertising my Fleetwood fifth wheel up there at "normal nada retail" price for my area and delivering it up there for free. No Kidding.
I'll be selling the skid steer with the attachments...
Thanks Moose.
I can't afford to mess this up. One thing I learned as a shipfitter working on submarines for 2 years is you only have one chance to get it right. My goal is to finish this 30'x50' building for $30k... Yep $20 per square foot, It's going to be close but I am on target.
Funny...
Form boards are pulled up and I leveled and packed the dirt around the slab. I'm putting 15 tons (approximatly 10 cubic yards) of #57 stone and 300' of Dupont Pro weed barrier around the building. 4' wide on both sides and the rear and 8' wide up front. Have enough left over to put in a 30'...
Did pretty good on the skid steer, attachments and trailer. Skidder only has 2900 hrs on it. Have only $9670 into everything.

Skid Steer $6150 w/ NC sales tax
Root grapple, pallet forks and stump grapple $1970
4 new tires for skid steer $650

Thank you Neil.
Slab is almost complete. They are supposed to be here tomorrow to rip down the forms. Just have to hurry up and wait for the new building to arrive in 10 days now.
The new shop is really starting to take shape now after months of planning, design, finding good contractors and waiting.
A last minute thrash to put in the last few pieces of rebar this morning while waiting for the building inspector to give his blessing. We forgot to put in the second layer...
Waste of money here. A couple electric or propane heaters will heat the shed just fine down here. I was born and raised in Michigan and have been to Yellowknife NWT in the middle of winter, they don't know what cold is down here. January is our coldest month Avg low is 31, avg high is 52. The...
It's been educational to say the least Bob. The guy I wanted to do the Job finally called me back......... 5 minutes after I went to his office, picked up my blueprints from his secretary and told them I hired somebody else.
Should be pouring concrete this week. The crew I hired usually only...
LOL
How would Lefty put it.
Yep, got that covered. I'm slam wore out checking off stuff from my bucket list.
I think I have gotten most of the wander lust out of my system. Working on projects that "I" want to do (not have to do) and being kicked back in my recliner watching a movie...
LOL
I hear ya Dave. I'm going through withdrawls too. Ain't even like I hid it out of sight either as it's still parked in the family room.
Too many irons in the fire right now and my Doc adjusting my meds the last 2 months and being tired all day ain't helping either.
Concrete work...
A quick update. Been doing nothing but pulling a couple stumps, a lot of debris cleanup, pushing dirt around and waiting. The building is supposed to be delivered June 1st. Right now I'm waiting for sand clay to be delivered and the concrete work is supposed to start monday.
The biggest...
Of what, my new wheelchair? They won't like me too much when I roll this thing through Walmart. That grapple was worth every penny. Great for moving those slow electric carts out of the way when they are blocking the aisle.
Oops Mommy, barn fall down and go boom.
Almost a Viking Funeral...
Oregon PUC price is without the state "tax added" for commercial vehicles with the Oregon PUC permit.
Indiana does the same thing for ALL commercial vehicles with a US DOT number.
Engineering drawings are in, waiting on the foundation drawings.
Scored a decent 23' gooseneck equipment trailer on Craigslist for $800 and a small Thomas 135 skid loader on Evilbay. Picked up a few Wild Cat attachments for it from Mid State on the way home with the skid loader.
The shed is...
Making a little progress today after spending half the day finishing up with and turning in the backhoe. Still boxing up the little stuff that you collect over the years and knocked one workbench and set of shelves out of the shop.
Pics as promised. Farewell old friend, your job is through...
Old school, need more space, just add a middle box so you can't see the 500 sockets in the top of the top box any more LOL.
I've long considered the long deep 72" boxes but I'm too cheap to spend the money on those big boxes. I'd rather have multiple boxes and have more small drawers than 1...
He did a beautiful job restoring the old Sterling and keeping it as original as possible. That just isn't my cup of tea.
Tools make money, or at least help you save it from having to hire someone to fix every little problem around the house.
Some people might think I have a problem when...
No no no no no thank you. I'm not doing any 4 year $100k nut and bolt restorations on something that is next to impossible to get parts for. Custom work only.
A little update.
Been busy the last few days. The new shop has gone to engineering to get plans drawn up and stamped. Shoud have...
That's a decent price for 5000 square feet with those specs and erected. Love the Flying Bridge, nice touch for a boat shop.
The Beverly Hillbillys was a great show.
Docs have me fairly stable now. I only work at my own pace and if I work too slow for somebody, they can bugger off to put...
Thanks Irvin.
As long as I keep the rig properly loaded I should be OK. Bet granny would be ****ed if I pull a wheely and dump her out of her rocking chair.
If I can build a 13' High 40' long Freightliner haul and tow truck in an 8 high 20 x 22 shop with a 7' high door squeezing a Cyclone Toy hauler in for maintenance in a 30 x 50 x 12 high building with a 10 high door should be easy.;)
I'm going to stick to 12 high. Quite frankly I have enough...
A quick update. Been so busy since I retired again that I can't seem to get anything done. I don't know how anybody ever finds time to have a job.
A new 30 x 50 x 12 steel building is going to be replacing my old dilapidated 20 x 22 x 8 shed that's about ready to fall down that I built my last...
I was giving my best effort to get JimB here.:D
I like the hauler body too and that's what I am going with. Hauler body with a B&W turnover ball gooseneck hitch for the flat bed bodies that works with their companion fifth wheels.
Started combing through the 2003 Ford Body Builders guide...
It won't be a salvage title.
I'd like to title it as a 55 Ford but the way the North Carolina title regs read for a vehicle that is totaly rebuilt with new or used parts it is most likely going to end up with the make as "Custom Built" the model as "2011 or 2012" (the year it was built. and...
Hi Jim & Jim
Jimtoo,
It could be done with Cheby guts.... Or Dodge guts... Or anything else you want to stuff in it. One thing I personally don't like to see is chevy guts stuffed in an old Ford or Dodge.
If I build a Chevy COE in the future it will have Duramax Allison guts. The old Chevy...
That's right, a 1955 Ford COE crew cab.
I'm going to take a 1955 Ford C series cabover, a 1956 Ford F100, a nice 2000 Ford E-450 ambulance cut cab & chassis with a 7.3 Powerstroke diesel and a Ford crew cab pickup Harley Davidson interior and mash them together into one cool truck that can be...
A quick update.
The 2000 Ford E-450 cut cab and chassis purchase is complete, I should have the title monday and will head out to pick eveything up next week and hopefully have some better pics for you next weekend.
I'm starting a new thread for the actual build.
Here ya go, Some numbers from my slow 768k Star DSL through a ZHONE ADSL2+ modem, a Belkin Play N600 wireless router and a Dell wireless 1505 draft 802.11n WLAN mini-card Rev 2.0 at my house that Y'all can compare your air cards too.
My ping is very good but the upload speed is hurting. Wonder...
I'm so busy around the house since I retired again that i don't have time to work.
It's raining pretty good today so I'm taking a break from clearing some brush and down limbs on the property. Yep, still cleaning up storm debris from Christmas as well as taking care of some other outdoor work...
Get ready to sit back in the recliner, grab a cold one and enjoy a new build project that will start in a couple weeks. Yep, it's just about show time...... What do we call this one...... "Watch and old retired trucker trick an old retired truck"
Yesterday I bought a 1955 Ford COE cab and...
Try it. Install it PROPERLY and if you don't like it you can always take it off and throw it in the bed of the truck. You can't put it on if you don't have it.
It's better to have something and not need it than to need it and not have it.
Very well moderated Forum. Thank you all.
It's very nice to be able to express opinions, experience and problems as a clean debate and open discussion without profanity and personal attacks.
Yep, a teaspoon of granola would really spice this gruel recipe up. LOL
~ Medieval Food and...
Most of the RV transport industry requires us to tow almost all trailers with a minimum 10k WD hitch unless using a medium duty... we don't use sway control.
That said. I'd never install a set "just for fun"..... But if that's what is fun for you, go for it and enjoy the bonding time with the...
