You could mount another alternator say a one wire older delco like the use in race cars and power it off of your driveshaft if you are really interested in a distinct charge line they used do do this on some of the older custom off road vehicles

Ok that makes some sense I was trying to figure out a way so they didn't feed back either way. I suppose you could use some type of relay but the way you describe probably don't need it.

I believe you could have put in a diode to prevent this.
