Banks Speed Brake

Notice #5 about thermally induced destruction! This isn't my first trip around the Jake or exhaust brakes. I have driven them for years and have had many many problems with the EXHAUST brake.

So, the thing that the manufacturers offer on pick-up trucks (and also the aftermakrket Banks speed brake) - It's not a "butterfly valve in the exhaust stream", and its certainly not a compression release Jake brake. Yet, all the manufactureres call it an Exhaust Brake - what's a guy to do?

Banks has a exhust brake but the newest one in called a speed brake witch works off your transmission and your turbo. It works real well, like you dropped an anchor. It is all plug and play and it takes one hour to install. It is stronger than stock brake on new 2011 duramax. FLOYD I have a spare one stitting in my garage off my old llm duramax.

Go to www.bankspower.com and check out "yes, buy thier own definition the "exhaust brake" that they manufacture! It is an exhaust brake, has been and always will be!

Calm down already.
I am well informed on the various ways to retard a vehicles forward motion.

This thread is about the Banks Speed Brake kit. This kit has no mechanical parts, only a control module that goes inline of the trucks engine harness'. There may or may not be a display unit, my truck used a Palm PDA to control the brake.

The Banks Speed Brake works my manipulating the VGT, (variable geometry turbo).
The turbo vanes are controlled by a solenoid and by closing them down you have the same effect as a downstream “exhaust brake” without the mechanical pitfalls of those units.

BTW – both GM (couple of years now) and Ford (MY 2011) do the exact same with the turbo.

The GM works pretty good, the Ford is pretty lame.

Not my first trip either – and by far a Telma Retarder is night and day above either typical exhaust brakes or “Jacobs” Brakes.

The comment in #5 about causing an avalanche is a little extreme. A truck with a “proper” intake and exhaust system is not going to make the noise they are referring too. The really loud jake brakes are trucks with modified or mechanically unsound intake and exhaust systems.

With the GM, Ford or even the Banks Speed Brake for that matter, the computer is in charge of activation, and as such can control and minimize the application if engine parameters are starting to exceed safe limits. Although Speed Brake use on earlier Duramax’s did not use a EGT input.

Does anyone own a banks speed brake that was purchased in the last year I see they now have a unit that has a switch rather than the programmable screen. looking for some comments on this. Any comments would be appreciated. Thanks CONVERT

Yes, I bought one almost 2 years ago ( "Banksbrake")and it has the switch, It was put in by Banks in Azusa,Ca at their location. I have been VERY happy with it with no problems.

Banks installed a Jacobs type brake on my Cummins exhaust, after the turbo. There are mechanical parts involved for the "Banksbrake" kit. It is switched on manually. I highly recommend it. It works well, with NO problems.

The Banks Speed Brake is not the same as a Banks Brake - two totally different animals, the OP was asking about the Speed Brake.

I had a jacobs exhaust brake on my 06 cummins. only had to replace the vacuum pump once! traded it when i got my 2010 D/A. I miss having an additional braking system and have been looking into something for the dmax. This might be the ticket!

I've had mine installed for a couple of weeks now and even though I haven't towed with it yet, I've been testing it out as best I can while unloaded. All I can say is it works as advertised and I think it will make a world of difference while towing.

Just returned fro a 2500 mile trip through the Southeastern States; even though there are no Rocky Mountain type mountain passes the Speed Brake worked just as avertised and makes pulling (actually stopping) a big 5th wheel a much more pleasing task. I opted the cheap route and only got the dash knob which works fine, but I believe the added control over the Speed Brake offered by the controller would be nice. Maybe someday I'll learn about being so cheap:) Wife and I are extremely pleased with the Speed Brake.
