Bedroom AC emitting foul odor

My AC unit in my bedroom is emitting a foul, almost sewage smell, when running. Does anyone know what would be causing this??

Maybe the p-trap for the wash machine is dry. Try adding water down the sewer pipe behind the washer (or where it would be). And if you don't have a washer, you may want to cap the drain off.

On Edit: And after re-reading your post - but slower... I'd climb up on the roof and remove the AC cover (4 screws - phillips head) and see if there's any condensate that is not draining out of that area. Be sure to turn the AC unit OFF first.

I would go with its sucking sewer gases from a roof vent. It could be worse depending on which way the wind is blowing.

check the seals around the vent pipes

Pull down the inside grill assembly. See if the attic has been blocked off. If the return is open to the attic, it can suck air from the attic, and since the sewer vents are not sealed from the attic, it will draw air from the outside through the sewer vents and into the air conditioner.

I would also inspect your vacuum-breaker vent under the bathroom sink to be sure it seals off. A little sewer gas goes along way.

It may help to isolate the problem a little. Try running just the fan on the air conditioner and see if the odor is being sucked in from a vent. If it only appears when the air conditioner--compressor, etc.--is active, then you may look at condensation draining, etc.

I had a similar problem and ended up sealing the space between the sewage vents and the "attic" with foam insulation spray.

One thing that will let unpleasant smells in the unit is leaving the gray tank open all the time. This could allow gases to back up into the unit if the 'p-traps' do not have water in them.

Thank you everyone!!! We took the AC apart from the inside and tried to make sure there weren't any gaps in the vent hose. It seemed to work for a night, but that was it. It doesn't always emit the smell. Some days are worse than others. I will let my husband know about all of your suggestions!! Hopefully one of them will fix it! Thank you again! I'm quite new to the "rv" lifestyle but everyone is really helping me get the hang of these little snags! Thanks
