Best route to oregon coast?

We are North bound on I-5, South of Medford pulling a Bighorn 3610RE w/ 350 diesel dually. Would like feedback on either route to the Coast:
1. Hwy 42 westbound out of Winston/Glengary to Hwy 101 or
2. Hwy 138 westbound out of Sutherlin to Reedsport and Hwy 101.
Does either route have any excessive grades?
Either route offer an advantage in scenery?

Thanks in advance

Haven't been on 42, but 138/38 is fine. A large part of the trip is a beautiful drive along the Umpqua River.

Godfrey and Kathy, Between the two, I would definitely recommend the 38 to Reedsport. It is a beautiful drive with very little hills and follows a long stretch of the Umpqua River which is VERY beautiful. We are down at the Mill Casino RV Resort in North Bend (Coos Bay) just finishing up the Oregon Rally down here. Where are you guys headed? If you get a chance, there are a bunch of us still here waiting for the Oregon RV Jamboree to begin next weekend here.

Godfrey and Kathy 138 is the best way in my opinion. You are very welcome to come by to visit us at the Mill if this is the way you are headed. I don't know if they have any sites left, but if not, you could still drop by from wherever your campground is.

Thanks to all that offered your info. We are still in Northern CA for a bit and will head thru Oregon late next week, definitely wanted to see the Coast as we head up to Washington.
Thanks again to all for your feedback.
Just love this HL site!!

If you can swing it, we are having the Washington Rally on July 25-27th in Deer Park at the Spokane RV Resort, which is not north of Spokane Washington. We would love to have you!
