checked me brakes today mate, bummer

3 out of 4 were working. The defective one had most of the wires inside the hub fried. Looks like they rubbed against the drum and shorted out.

We are getting ready to head out for our second outing (Approximately 900 miles this time) with the 3110DS. After our first outing into the desert, at trip of about 35 miles one way, I did not like the way the brakes felt.

So the other day I adjusted them. Adjusted till I could not turn them then backed off 5 clicks.

Today I started off jacking up one wheel at a time and had Judy apply the brakes and sure enough it became hard to rotate the wheel. I then remove the emergency breakaway rod and sure enough the wheel could not be turned in the direction of travel.

'Good' I said to myself. Jacked up the next tire and could not get the electric brakes to work at all. Removed the wheel from the axle and saw the wiring was fried. The clips that hold the electromagnet wires to the brake actuation lever were not attached to the lever.

I took the magnet into the garage and hooked it up to a 12 Volt DC power supply and sure enough it held a small crescent wrench. So at least it was not ruined. I splice some new wires on it ( I used speaker wire, looks to be the same gauge, I'm sure the jacket has different thermal, oil resistance, chafe and other characteristics, but I went with it anyway), put some heat shrink on, installed the wire clips and tie wrapped the wire to them. They would not fit thru the clips with the heat shrink on them.

The spring clip that holds the electromagnet to the brake activation lever was not anywhere to be found. Great! I called Lipperts service center, talked with Dave. He said the clips are used only during assemble and he had none to send me. He said I did not need and and that it will work fine without it. What ya goin to do!

I reassembled it all and it works fine.

Good things to check. We took ours in to have the wheel bearings repacked prior to our latest trip. The tech said the seals blew out on both curb side tires and coated the brakes with grease.

How many miles do you think you have on your Big Horn? Do you carry a lot of weight? Just curious as to how I need to pull the drums and check.

I replaced two inter wheel bearing seals @ 18K on Alko 7000k axles. The axles came with grease fittings to lube bearings. I suspect that type of greaseable bearing have a tendency to blow out the seals because of the grease gun pressure when lubing.

I believe this is a lesson for all of us to check the brakes at least once per year and before any long trip.
