Cold Tire Pressure

Don't know if this is in the right section, but I did not see a tire pressure area.

The other morning I did my tire pressure checks and topped everything off to the max cold pressure of 65psi. The temperature was in the low 50s. Today I rechecked the tires. 67-68 psi. The temperature was in the mid 80s. Is this 2-3 psi going to make a differance. Should a readjust or am I over thinking. Thanks

Hi Jwalker,

I believe the cold pressure is meant for a nominal temperature of 70 degrees F. Pressure varies a bit over 1 psi per 10 degrees of ambient temperature change. So when you set the pressure to 65 at 50 degrees, you were slightly overinflated. The sun also influences pressure readings, so you can see side to side variances as well.

If you're at 67-68 psi at 85 degrees, then you can figure that you'll be pretty close to 65-66 psi when temps get back to 70.

If I remember correctly, Roger Marble (tireman9) discusses this on his blog. And the answer is no, this small amount of psi isn't going to make much difference. I always check my tire pressure in the morning before the trip for the day. Even when I traveled from a 80 degree area to a 112 degree area, the cold pressure didn't change much.
