DW is H... Bent on going to New Orleans need some insight

My wife is really wanting to go to New Orleans in late July. Either of us have ever been. While I'am not as enthused as she, I am not totally opposed especially when I think of all the great Cajun cooking. Anyway I would greatly appreciate any insight as far as area to stay in or avoid, campground recommendations, must do's or see's. Thank You for your input!

French Quarter Rv park is nice and convenient but you will pay for it. I will be in area week ending 7/15 and rates were close to $100 night. We are staying at lake ponchatraine Rv park as I needed to be near the quarter for meetings. Check out the state parks in the area and drive into the city. Stay away from anything on Chef Menture hwy. bad area. If you are a veteran and have access to the fam camps look into NAS Belle Chase as well.

Make sure you eat a lot and drink a little and have a good time but stay safe. Send me a pm if you have specific questions.

We've been there several times. We always stay in Mandeville, LA off I-12 on the North side of the lake. We stay at Fontainbleu State Park.. It's about 35 miles to the French quarter, but we like being a little away from New Orleans. Parking our DRW truck was sometimes a challenge and at times spent way too much time looking for a parking spot, plus getting around the narrow streets was interesting too. What we do now is to park just off Canal street on a side street 3 or 4 miles away from town and take the trolley that runs down the middle of Canal. It's much nicer getting in and out and the trolley is a nice ride too.

jassson and MT thank you both I really appreciate your help and suggestions. I have only really thought about going to NO for a sugar bowl game or Mardi Gras so still trying to get excited about going in the heat of July. Thanks again!

NO can be fun. We have only stayed at French Quarter RV Resort but as Andy mentions - it is pricey. We were there a couple weeks ago and our club friends Kevin and Nelly W stayed at Belle Chase (retired Navy). It was about 35 minutes to the quarter from Belle Chase and 5 minutes from French Quarter RV Park. Kevin parked at my RV and we used Uber to get around. It worked great. I'd never want to drive the dually in the quarter. What Terry does seems viable though (park a distance from the quarter and trolley in).

A couple of years ago we went and stayed at Bayou Segnette State Park. It is only about 15 miles from New Orleans and around $25/night. We were able to park and catch a ferry into the city avoiding the cost of parking.

We had planned on being in NO last month, but problems came up that changed our route. Still want to go maybe this spring though I guess will miss the nightlife as the only time this old boy is up at midnight is to go to the bathroom! LOL

I'll add my $0.02 worth. I will second the WWII museum, was called the D-Day Museum when I went with my Dad and Son. When the museum found out my Dad was a WWII Vet, they pulled out the red carpet and treated him like a king.

If you are in the Quarters, you have to stop at Central Groceries. It is a little Italian deli that is the creator of the muffuletta...it is awesome. When I was going to LSU in Baton Rouge, we would sneak away on occasion and drive the Quarters and have a muffuletta and a cold beer or 2, then drive back to campus. For some reason wasn't that interested in class on those evenings???

It's on the coast, but just spend two weeks in Vicksburg Mississippi prior to New Orleans and it will seem like winter in North Dakota.

Our favorite eats:
Carousel Bar in Hotel Monteleone. Good luck getting a seat though. We stayed at this Hotel last year for 5 days and never got a seat.
Deanie's Seafood on Iberville, Cafe du Monde for beignets and delicious coffee, The Napoleon House has great sandwiches, Mr. B's Bistro on Royal St., Oceana Grill. Take the trolley to St Charles and Napoleon ave to Superior Seafood, good menu and oysters on the half shell during happy hour $6 for a dozen. Finn McCool's Irish pub is off the beaten path but by far hands down our favorite.

Treats:
Stop by Lafitte's Blacksmith Shop Bar On Bourbon St. supposedly the oldest building that is a bar anywhere. If you like aviation or really cool buildings go out to the Lakefront Airport on Stars and Stripes Blvd. It is incredible and the food is really good too. IMO City Park on Palm Drive is a must see. They have a slew of sculptures that are just amazing. The WW2 museum is a must do! I could go on but those are our favorites.

Our Aunt and Uncle have lived in NO for the last 20 years and with that knowledge we get to see the best there is to see plus many of the amazing things there are when you leave the quarter.

I was stationed in the middle of the Great Dismal Swamp outside Chesapeake Virginia, and I can remember the oppressive heat/humidity building up to an afternoon thunderstorm most every day in the mid-summer. It was a pretty neat place to be when the East Coast total solar eclipse happened and all of the birds around settled down for the "night".
