Engine Overheating Problem

I would also check the coolant level in the reservoir after the truck is hot. To clarify my earlier post, I had to add coolant to a half inch above the full mark after the truck was hot. I haven't gotten the low coolant warning since.

Jayc, When you mention that the temp dropped substantially below normal on the downgrade, it sounds like a possible start of a thermostat issue. A thermostat stuck open would allow this to happen. However, if it were to stick in the closed position, it would be a major overheating problem with coolant all over the place. The next time the vehicle is in for service, it probably wouldn't hurt to have the thermostat changed.

Well the final part of the story is that I took the truck to the Chevy dealer here in Colorado Springs. Their service tech found a very small leak-under pressure-in one of the coolant lines to the turbo. . He said it was very hard to find, but it is fixed. Thank goodness, because we start back to Texas.

That's great that he found a leak. I knew it had to be a leak someplace,, that stuff does not evaporate. Had to be going someplace... just glad you found.

I really thought there was a problem with the gauge or the sensor. The engine temp was fine but the low coolant light kept coming on. We're leaving today, so I guess I'll know soon enough. Here's hoping...
