I was concerned about the heat coming through the counter on top of the fireplace. As other posters noted the fireplace was set on the rug and wasn't supposed to be. I took mine out and the factory has set the fireplace onto a plywood riser which is on the rug. I don't see a problem with that at all, especially as there is not too much heat down at that level. I installed a 3" X 10" heat grate in the side near the top so it was out of sight. I had hoped it would help to dissipate some of the heat build up but it didn't really help. I think I am going to find a small fan and mount in there to blow the surplus heat out. The blower on the heater should really have a higher speed setting on it. Also when I had the fireplace out I found a stereo woofer or something like that behind it which I had no idea was there. Wonder how long it will last with all that heat in there?
