Fresh water tank

What is the correct way to fill the fresh water tank? My old 5th wheel had a tank I could see when filling so this hidden tank is new to me. I have heard some people say they had problems and were told they were over filling the tank.

I fill the tank while my wife watches the gauge inside. I shut off the water when she tells me the gauge reads 1/3 full. When we are dry camping I fill the tank as close as possible to my camp site.

I think Heartland has the issues with the fresh water tank resolved. Normally you add water to the fresh water fill spot until water starts coming out of the vent hole next to the fill hole.
The problems earlier were blocked or pinched vent lines and not enough bracing/support under the tank.
