Gas heater return air filter?

We have a 2011 Big Country 3250TS and the return air grill if above the kitchen cabinets over the sink near the ceiling. I have wondered for a long time if there is a filter behind that grill. It is so high up I will need a 8' ladder to get up there to change it if there is a filter?

Does is look like this one? If so, I'd grab a chair and step from chair to counter-top. Then you should be able to see if there is a filter. I'm guessing there isn't one in there.

No filter. Just an empty void in the wall that terminates down in the basement.

We have two and you would not believe how much accumulates just on the prefilter which is easy to clean.

Any reason we cant install a fiberglass type filter? Back pressure, etc., on heat pump?

Reduced air flow can cause furnace failure to operate correctly.

Is there anything wrong with sealing this vent in the summer? I feel a lot of warm air coming in from the vent when the A/C is running. I know it has to be open in the summer
