Generator Prep

Gen prep is done at the factory. It's expensive to retrofit. If you have gen prep, a gen install can easily be done by a dealer or independent shop, or even you if you're handy.

If you are handy and mechanical, it can be done. I did mine, IMHO, I did a better job than the factory preps I had seen when doing my research.

Are authorized dealers able to do the generator prep or should this be done through the factory?

The Gen-Prep is designed to be done at the factory. It generally includes:

  • Generator Cabinet (sheet metal box)
  • Generator Mount (Onan base - mounted inside gen cabinet)
  • Start Switch and Hour Meter (inside coach and wired back to gen cabinet)
  • Transfer Switch
  • Wiring (shore power to transfer switch, gen power to transfer switch, transfer switch output to AC panel)
There's no reason why a dealer or coach owner couldn't install this equipment but it's a lot easier to have it done at the factory if you're ordering a new coach.

This all said, some people plan to use a portable generator - not a built in one. For those people, doing it yourself or having your dealer do the prep may be a better bet as you'd only need the transfer switch, if even that. A lot of people adapt their 50 amp RV power plug to their portable generator.
