Re: HELP - Broke down on road - need part numbers

Just spoke with Malcolm. He's got the part numbers and is almost out of power on his phone and has terrible reception. Probably won't be able to answer more calls right away.

Thanks for calling, Dan. The MiFi unit is at least picking up a little data. If you want to delete this thread you can.

Re: HELP - Broke down on road - need part numbers

Thanks for those that helped. The mobile service technician found a trailer parts house in Kingman and brought a new brake assembly (backing plate, magnet, shoes, etc.), hub and bearings. He got everything together good enough to travel the 23 miles to Seligman where we are camped tonight. The threads on the end of the spindle are stripped pretty good, so the shop here is going to cut off, pick up and weld in a new spindle tomorrow.

We suspect the culprit was the cap on the hub coming loose inside the decorative cap on the wheel. This let the outer bearing dry out over time and it essentially disintegrated. We were fortunate someone flagged us down on US 40 to let us know we had a problem. When we pulled over, smoke was pouring out of the openings in the wheel. I pulled the wheel off the hub while waiting on the repair tech to arrive. I was able to pull the hub off the spindle with no problem. Our wheel was that close to just flying off (and causing who knows what kind of damage).

Re: HELP - Broke down on road - need part numbers

Sounds exactly like the same problem we had while driving through Phoenix in January.

A passing motorist pulled up beside of us and pointed at his eyes and then the trailer (I took that to mean 'look at the trailer'), so I pulled off at the next exit.

It wasn't until I pulled over that we saw smoke rolling out from the wheel well of the trailer.

We luckily were less than a mile from Sun City RV . . . too late in the day to get it fixed so we spent the night at an RV park right next door to them . . . and had the trailer there the next morning at 8 a.m. when they opened.

They had to take the axle off, sent it off to an axle shop where they cut it in half and welded a new spindle and brake assembly.

They also repacked the other three wheel bearings.

Roughly $1000 repair ($988 to be exact).

First shot showing the weld, the new spindle and brake assembly, second shot the hub after the repair was done:

Third shot at the RV park next door to Sun City RV in Phoenix (notice the front trailer tire leaning in at the top), fourth shot was us leaving the repair center.

I had the same problem on a 24' inclosed trailer. But it was user error for never maintaining my bearings. I hand pack as well and already have on my 4200 ( right after I picked it up). I'm glad I did because there wasn't adequate grease on any of the six spindles. I'm a freak about spare parts. I wonder if a set of outer and inner bearings makes sense for my spare parts bag? Course.... We could get carried away with. "What if" But two days away from my vacation waiting for parts would suck though.. If I remember correctly, they weren't terribly expensive.

Well our total bill was right at $1400. About half of that was to get us going far enough to get to a campground. They ultimately just installed a complete new axle. We weighed that against waiting a couple days to get an axle stub in and have it welded on. The entire axle tube assembly ended up being more cost effective.

The he other partially hidden cost will be the grease-soaked G614 tire that will be more likely to need replacement soon. It is currently in the spare position now. I will probably go ahead and pop for a replacement here soon.

I'd bet the tire will be fine, just clean the grease off it.

They wanted to replace our whole axle as well, but there weren't any to be had in the Phoenix area, and they told us it would take a week to get one delivered.

Which is why they did the cut and weld on ours.

Glad everything worked out for you!

Mix up a soapy solution of Dawn or Tide, and scrub the heck out of it. That tire is a tough tire and a little grease will not hurt it. Infact a lot of grease will not hurt it.

I agree with Jim.Allison, grease and oil is not good for a tire but it takes a lot of it and a long exposure to do serious damage. If you've ever looked at the tires on a working DC-3 or Convair the tires are always covered with oil. It's my opinion that it's worse to leave the tire in the spare position vs washing it off and putting it back in service where the natural elements will help to remove the grease contaminants.

Wow! Sorry to hear this. I'd get all the remaining bearings inspected and repacked.

On edit, depending on how the 1st axle failed and how long it was in a failed condition, the remaining axle might have been carrying more weight than normal.

DON'T GO TO ANY CASINO'S FOR A WHILE! ..... Luck has not been with you guys these few days... I do hope you get back together as fast as the other time.

When the first axle failed it was probably lack of grease. Overloading the axle would probably bend it before it took out the bearings. If one axle was not greased properly then I would suspect the remaining axles that were installed at the same time might not be greased properly as well. Have all the bearing looked at in every axle to make sure they are ok. Are you in Phoenix or north of Phoenix? I have relatives in Prescott Valley that might be able to help you out.

We are parked behind Al's RV Parts and Repair on the west side of Phoenix. They set us up for the weekend with power and water. Monday we'll find out how many weeks we'll be spending in a hotel until they get around to being able to fix it.

I've already decided to have them replace all four brakes (entire assemblies), bearings, seals, hub/drums and four of the five G614s. We'll keep one of the ones from the other side as a spare. Then, everything will be nice and new.

For lack of looking at our bearing caps once in a while, we'll probably be out $5,000 or more (including hotel bills, spoiled food, repairs, etc.)
