Bill and I spent the summer in AK last year - workamping near Seward at Renfros Lakeside Retreat. We had a blast! Consider a stop there, if/when you go that way! Tell Gary Bill and Kelly sent you! He gives discounts to people who book Kenai Fjords tours through him!

I blogged about our trip - check it out, if you'd like: bkamericanodyssey.com

posts start early May and continue through October - there are 2 summary posts that give a lot of good tips.

Biggest tip I want to mention now - just go slow and drive for road conditions and you will be fine! Make sure to do all maintenance type things before heading up!

Have a great trip!

We did the dinner cruise out to Fox island from the Seward. Good time. Recommend!!
Nice Aquarium there. Visit the NP, Exit Glacier. Seward Brewing Co, good food!!
Moose Pass just north of Seward has a summer solstice festival in June!!!

Stop by and visit if you make it to Valdez. I work two weeks on then two weeks off but will be here all of July and first two weeks in August. I park on the Airport next to the Hangar I fly out of, the Cyclone is hard to miss. I would be happy to show you around the area and/or answer any questions about the ALCAN or Alaska in general.

Well thanks! We might just take you up on that, you never know! Our plans on the Kenai are pretty flexible. Was banking on staying in a campground in Soldotna a few nights, but found it was not available due to the salmon run. Only thing fixed at this point is Denali NP area around July 4th. Looking to spend the next couple weeks or so in the Kenai.

There's a Fred Myers in Soldotna where you can boondock. Potable water and dump station
Plus you're allowed to boondock at most any wide spot along the road

We traveled the Trans-Canada Highway 1 from Abbotsford BC along the Fraser River Canyon to Cache Creek today. The scenery along the canyon was fantastic! Getting through Canada customs, not so much. They seemed very interested in my toolbox.

That's 'cause they know you've been in Colorado recently . . .

You mentioned Kenai----we spent a year and half (yes through the winter, we are originally from ME) at the Diamond M rv/ranch----if you stop by there say hello to Blair/Ronna for us
The roads will be fine, just drive slow and enjoy the trip.

Hot springs admission is 20% off tomorrow, June 21, in honor of First Nation people.

Lyle, did you do Whitehorse to Dawson City in one day? We're thinking about going part way and stopping overnight.

Was not in Dawson City. My goal was to traverse the Alaska Hwy from end to end. Plus when we were in the Dawson Creek visitors center the advice was to bypass. Too early in the year. Road conditions not good. Looks like Byrd made it ok. Have a safe trip.
We didn't return that way either. I heard a large portion is gravel road. We were on the Dalton Hwy (haul road north) to the Arctic Circle, a gravel road (no BH) that was mud from rain, was not interested in a repeat. Best case likely a lot of dust according to a Texas RV'er we were parked beside in Seward.
