Congrats on the Pistol. For your first handgun you made a great choice. I was going to suggest to stay with a 9mm or smaller. 2 reasons, for this being your first gun you dont need to deal with recoil. Use a gun that has less recoil until you build the confidences in yourself. The other reason is Mag Capacity. Now you maybe a spot on shooter with little training, never know. But it is better to have those few extra rds then not. My XD 9 holds 16+1.
Rounds are cheap for a 9mm, go burn them up and enjoy
You wife may find the 9mm to be a bit to large. My suggestion is to get her a nice .380. For a woman I would stay away from the Ruger LCP or the Keltec version because they are very light. Even though its a small caliber they have a fair amount of recoil due to the light frame. Sig P238 is a heavy framed woman friendly pistol. My wife loves hers and it fits great in her small hand.
