Is this broken?

While in the process of replacing our shower faucet, I discovered vacuum breaker check valve appears to be broken, or part of it is missing (the black thing in the picture, sorry it's fuzzy). I ordered a replacement from Amazon, but does anyone know if it is truly is no longer functional? I think I recall seeing the box shaped piece in the (behind the wall) basement area a few years back... but we didn't know what it was.

Yes. It's behind the shower wall. There is a plate that the shower faucet attaches to that fits over this opening. Sorry the pic is bad.

i would expect you to have water pouring out the top if using the black flush. From many years ago as plumbing contractor there is a seal which typically move up to seal off the cap when water is on. Unless the seal is built into the valve body and the cover is what gives you the air brake.

I'm wondering if it's possible that the top part (looks like a cover) just diverts the water downward in the event of a discharge, and came off when it was installed.

Honestly, we've not had any issues with the black tank flush. No water anywhere. So I guess it's doing something correctly. Regardless, I've ordered another. I'll keep this as emergency backup.
