Kansas City Kansas Campgrounds...

I am not sure if I made this post earlier, but I could not find one, so I am starting this thread looking for some assistance in finding a campground around Kansas City KS.

We are on our way to Gillette and we plan to stop around Kansas City but have not come upon a suitable CG. There is suppose to be one around Topeka but I was hoping to find one closer to Kansas City.
Near Topeka:
Deer Creek Valley RV Park Topeka - Great reviews but a long way away...
Forbes Landing RV Park
Lake Shawnee Campgrounds
Topeka/Capital City KOA, Not good reviews.

Near Kansas City
Hillsdale State Park - Like this one but it is fairly south..
Cottonwood RV LLC - Old reviews and not very good.

Lawrance Kansas:
Topeka Hilltop Campground - Nice park but water problems from latest review.
Lawrence/Kansas City KOA now Jellystone - Not good reviews.

Any Suggestions..

If you're going up I-35 heading North..There's a great place in Eagleville, MO, called Eagle Ridge. It's 15 miles south of the IA/MO border. The nicest people there are, Shelby and Bob, run this place. We always stop there when going North or South. Deer Creek Valley is really nice, we've stayed there. There is also a nice State Park about 30 miles North of KCMO. Something, something Woolen Mills. A little hard to get to as the road is narrow and winding, electric only with a place to fill your water and dump. Nice concrete pads, well kept. There isn't much going North from Kansas City. Don't even think about Terrible's Casino just inside the IA border. The name fits it!...Good luck Don

Bob,
Are you stuck on the KC, KS area, or you willing to slip over to MO a little ways? The campground Don is talking about is Watkins Mill. It's a state park, and has a pretty nice campground. Haven't camped there personally, but been up there several times...professionally. There is a real nice fishing lake, a walking/bike trail around the lake. You'll usually see deer & turkey while there, plus the other critters. Further west from Watkins Mill, close to US 169, there is a county campground on Smithville Lake. The lake is COE, but the park & campgrounds are operated by the county. I've camped there a few times, not far from home & I get 3 free days as a retired county employee. There are no full hook-ups, but some of them have water & elec. Also there is another SP nearer to KC, KS, Weston Bend SP, never camped there, but I've driven through their camp ground, and it looked pretty nice, but if I remember right there weren't that many campsites. In the SP you can make reservations, but I'm not sure about Smithville Lake.

Watkins Mill has an 1800's woolen mill that's pretty interesting, and not far from there is the Jesse & Frank James home were they were raised, which is also a county park. Farther north off of I-35 near Cameron, MO is another state park, Wallace State Park, another nice park. Haven't camped there in an RV (just with the Boy Scouts), so I can't tell you much about RV camping there. If we had room here, you'd be welcome, but the driveway is filled up with our 5er. When will you be coming through? Maybe we can hook up, & if you'll be around awhile, I can be a tour guide. My cell # is 816-769-5411, email, olcoon@prodigy.net

If you are wanting around the Kansas City, MO area, there is a really nice one at Worlds Of Fun/Oceans of Fun park. You do not have to go to the fun parks to stay there. All the spaces are really large and concrete pads with full hookups and pool. It is right off I-435 and we have stayed there a lot of times when we are heading north to Colorado/Montana area. You can get on the Worlds Of Fun website and see the prices, phone numbers, etc. Hope this helps and have a great time in Gillette.

Thanks for the responses. Not sure yet where we are going to stay. It may come to be a couple of parks around Topeka. I looked at the Worlds Of Fun/Oceans of Fun park. Not sure I want to spend the Memorial Weekend at a fun park. I like the CoE parks but they are full for almost all weekends. Plan to stay a week plus Memorial Day.

Also looked at the CG's arouwn Lawarnce KS. Staying on the Mo side doesn't bother me but it is not in the direction we are intending to go.

Roy.. Where ever we stay I will try to contact you and maybe we can have dinner togeather... It would be nice to see you again..
