New England Bound

We're going to Goshen and then from there make our first journey to New England. Maine, VT NH. Would appreciate any and all tips on the route, campgrounds, sites to see, things to do, etc. We are mapping out our trip now to hopefully have it available while we're in Goshen to let some of you experts on NE take a good look at it.

We have not included any of the area of lower NY, NJ, etc,but will do that on our next trip.

Obviously we will be returning to TX so we'll come home a different route.

We are heading out to the New England area after the National Rally as well. We will come home to South Bend for a little while first and then head out towards end of July. We should get together and compare notes at the rally.

Not sure of your exact route or how much time you'll have, but places I'd recommend and things to do.

Central NY:

Turning Stone Campground Exit 33, Verona, off the NYS T-way. Very nice F/H site w/ paved roads/sites. Casino nearby w/ very nice BBQ rest and Buffett joint. Boxing Hall of Fame nearby. Pepis Pizza (top notch)
West Canada Creek Campground, Poland NY (approx 12 miles NE of Utica (exit 31 off the T-way). Awesome owners. Fish, tube, canoe or kayak on river. Old Forge nearby. FX Matt Brewery in Utica. Piggy Pats BBQ (1/2 hour away)

Adirondacks:

Old Forge Camping Resort, Old Forge NY. Sites area tad close, but all shaded. Cannot run A/C or water heater on electric---so can be a problem if very hot/humid. Hiking, kayaking, canoeing, water park, Old Forge Hardware store. Check on size as we had a 35' 5er and no problem.

Northern NY:

Swan Bay Resort, Alex Bay NY. Right on the St Lawrence Seaway. Brand new. F/H (no cable tho). Tour boats, fishing, sightseeing--Bolt Castle & Singer Castle.. TI (thousand islands) bridge to CA--worth driving or walking across.

Eastern NY/Lake George:

Many campgrounds:
Main one is LG RV Camping Resort on Rte 149, 1/2 to a mile or so from Rte 9. Sites are very close. F/H. Lot of shaded sites and fair number of open sites. Lots of CG activities and acts in CG's own "theatre". Lots of kids. Traffic is a nightmare Fri afternoon thru Sun Afternoon from I-87 to CG (plan on 5-10 minutes extra or bit more)
Ledgeview RV Park, also on Rte 149 lil ways past LGRVR, very shaded, lots of seasonals, less kids, sites fairly close.
Moose Hill Lock RV Resort, also on Rte 149 few miles from Rte 9, IMO the best one. H-U-G-E sites, all F/H. HUGE heated pool. All sites separated from others w/ tress. Stone/gravel roads, stone/level sites. LARGE granite rocks are fire pits.
What's nearby: Great Escape, Lake George, tour boat on LG itself. Ft William Henry. Veterans Mem Drive, Saratoga racetrack, tubing, Lake Placid (approx a couple hr drive 1 way), Ft Ticonderoga, Ausable Chasim (they have a CG too, but don't know anything about it), Barnsider BBQ & Pizza Jerks in LG, Vermont Teddy Bear/Shelborne Muesum, Ben & Jerry's/Von Trapp lodge all in VT and a decent day trip+. Local fairs may be up and running.

Fuel:

Western NY:
Salamanca Nation off the T-way but cannot recall the exit but going east, east of Westfield & before Buffalo.

Central NY:
Exit 41 Off the T-way, Senaca Falls, Petro $$$
Exit 36, Syracuse, Pilot $$
Exit 33, Verona (Turning Stone exit), Sav-On

Eastern NY:
Exit 28, Fultonville, T/A
Exit 25A/I-88, Pilot $$
Exit 12, Schodak (east of Albany-still I-90 just no tolls on this portion), Pilot $$
B3, Cannon, Love's (last exit in NY before MA along the T-way)
I-87 (Northway Albany to Montreal), Exit 16, Wilton, "Scotty's"

We love Manchester Maine, its the home of Orvis sporting goods if you're a fisherman. I also second Old Forge, NY we go two or three times a year but stay in our friends cabin. If you're planning on going into the adirondacks stay at the KoA in Lake Placid its a wonderful area and tons to do/see.

In order to help get you to "New England" you might want to eyeball a map and give us an idea of how you want to get from Texas to the East Coast. Some folks would travel along I-10 along the Gulf to Florida and head north. You also have I-30 to I-40 out of Texas. Lots of ways to head north East. So what is on your mind would definitely help us give you some useful info.

Lots to see in a big area, but I would ensure a visit to Boston for the historical sights...not a lot of campgrounds there, but I would suggest Scusset Beach State Park or Salisbury State Park. Both are close to mass transit routes. The benefit of Scussett is closeness to Plymouth and Cape Cod if that is of interest. It is also on the Cape Cod canal which is interesting in its own right and also an easy day trip to Marthas Vineyard or Nantucket islands.

In Maine, for me it's all about the coast. Boothbay Harbor, Belfast area, and Bar Harbor... maybe a sailing trip to one of the islands off the coast. Remember....Maine is huge and takes a lot of time to cover. Northern Maine and New Brunswick CA have Campobello island and the Bay of Fundy.

In NH, you have the lakes region and the White Mountains region that are must visits. A trip on the cog railway up Mt. Washington and ride on the Kancamangus highway with a swim in the swift river at lower falls. Mountain zip lines at Bretton Woods, Attitash Mtn. are fun, and the hiking is fantastic throughout the region. Lakes region....try a dinner cruise on the MS Mt. Washington.

Need to be there around Sept or Oct. to see the leaves change. Peeper time...

What a timely thread!!! We are attending the National Rally, then going to Niagara Falls for a few days, then headed to Bar Harbor for a week. Since we are retired, we were going to "wing it" for some of the sites as we head back home to Virginia. Our only time constraint is we have to be home by the end of July.

Dean. When you go to Bar Harbor ME check out the Timberland Acres RV Park. It's a good park for a good price. Most of the others are not as good and/or way over priced..

Here also is where to go get lobster. They only charge you one fee for cooking the lobster no matter how many you order. Others charge you a cooking fee for each lobster. Check with the office. They told me about this place..

Thanks Bob, will definitely check them out. We currently have reservations at Hadley's Point Campground on Desert Island (we got the last F/H site).

By far Maine is a favorite of ours.

Highly recommend Acadia National Park and drive up Cadillac Highway, unbelievable views from the top.
Bar Harbor
Boothbay is a must especially if you like Maine lobster.

We stayed at KOA right on the water for our visit to Acadia and we loved this campground. On site restaurant serving lobster!

New Hampshire is beautiful as well lots to do.

Vermont is stunningly beautiful and also an expensive state! We visited Dakin and other cheese makers and Apple Barn.

If you get to NY and Lake George we stayed at King Phillips Campground, very convenient location and we were there after Labor Day so most places were already closed for the season. Be sure and visit Oscar's Smokehouse for the BEST Hickory smoked bacon ever along with fresh cut meats!

Two Campgrounds we like are saddleback in Northwood Nh on RT 43 very convenient to Dover, Concord, Manchester & Portsmouth NH.
The other Campground is Twin Tamarack Campground on RT 104 in Hampton NH. Very convenient to Meridith, Weirs, Laconia NH and the White mountains. White Mountains, Lincoln, NH 03251

Greetings and welcome to Maine. Where are you now?

By the way, there is a great section of road that you may consider in the future trip from/to Texas and Maine. It's the route 209 between Stroudsburg and Milford, PA. Just do a quick search on Google Maps for both locations and you'll see what I mean. Commercial traffic is not allowed through that park so when I haul cars up here, I cannot take that route but, I DO take it when I run between Maine and Florida with our 5er.

We are currently up here for most of this year (actually in Stockton Springs) with our Big Country 3900 FLP.
