No 110 from "shore"

Well, we just had an Onan 5500 genset installed, and it's great, but last night, without thinking, I started the generator while plugged into 110. Now we only have 110 when the generator is running, and not with shore power... What to do?

Hello Wolfden16 and welcome to this great forum. Lots of helpful people here.
I'm no expert on gensets, but I think there are a couple of things you can check.
Check the breaker in pedestal that you are plugged into.
There may be a couple of breakers on your transfer switch. Check them.
And if you just had that Onan installed you might want to check the wires at the transfer switch. One or more may be loose
Before doing any electrical work be sure to turn off the generator and unplug from shore power.
If all else fails, call the installer.

Peace
Dave

Hi Wolfden16,

The genset should have been installed with an automatic transfer switch that allows only one power source to be used at a time. Assuming the correct transfer switch, installed correctly, when you fired up the genset, it should have automatically switched to the genset about 30 seconds after the generator was started. When you turn off the generator, the switch should automatically switch back to shore power.

If everything was installed correctly, there shouldn't be a problem caused by starting the generator while plugged into shore power.

The automatic transfer switch needs to have a minimum of 105V on L1 for the contactors to engage. So a loose shore power cord could easily be responsible.

Just an update. We checked everything, called the installer, called a nephew who is an electrician, and it was..... the surge protector...
Thanks for the great advice above; everything we learn helps. Appreciate you all.
