Places to park/camp along Interstate Rt 40

In April we will be taking 3 weeks to travel on Rt 40 from TN to Las Vegas (we actually live in MD but our travel up to TN is covered). We have never traveled more than 200 mi from home & always stayed at full service RV parks. This trip we would like to find some free or low cost places to spend the night or several days. We have a generator & are prepared to try some dry camping. Each week we plan to stop at a full service campground for a day or two to use the laundry. I had picked out several National Parks not far off of Rt 40, & with my handicapped pass would get 50% off of the already low cost, but then I found out that most of them don't open until May. So how do we find places to stay for low or no cost?.

Hi joet,

I know that Woodalls.com lets you filter campground searches to show only campgrounds that are open year-round.

I usually use Google maps to figure out approximately where I want to stop. Then I look for campgrounds nearby. I also check with RVParkReviews.com to get real feedback on the park, rather than the "professional" ratings.

One thing to think about; your on-board generator probably uses a bit less than a gallon/hour of run time. You may not need to run it very much in April because you won't need air conditioning, but at $3.75-4.00/gallon, you can pay for an RV Park pretty quickly.

Check out www.mobilerving.com and you can search for campgrounds and get alot of other camping info.

Another option is casino camping.
I know a couple that went from Wisconsin to Arizona and paid very little for camping. Most of is was free.
HERE is one source for information.

When you get around Little Rock, AR. A great Corp park is Maumelle Park which is off Hy 10. That is about 4 miles to the turn, off of I-40 in North Little Rock. It is a very clean and level park with lots to see around the area. Site with discount would $11. to $14.

When you are looking at recreation.gov for federal parks, in the winter months the parks often, expecially COE parks, just close part of the park and sometimes make the part that is open first come first serve so you can't make reservations. At first it sometimes appears that the parks are closed when they actually aren't. If in doubt, give them a call.

Traveling west on I-40 @ exit 258, there are two VERY NICE COE parks. Opening March 1, I believe. Available to reserve on recreation.gov. 1) Salt Lick Creek, 2) Defeated Creek. Both are on Cordell Hull Lake. Probably 50/50 full hookups. With Golden access card you get 50% discount. Good Luck and safe travels.:)
