I assume you are talking about running the Water Heater on both AC (120v) and Propane ( 12v ). The advantage is a faster recovery if you have several people taking showers back to back or someone is washing dishes and another is trying to take a shower... if you run both it will keep up with the demand - where as 120v or Gas alone may not.

Yeah, that makes sense. Sorry for the confusion -- the labels on the switches read 120V and 12V (which, of course, is the propane side).

If both switches are on, will both system run at the same time or does the system default to 120V and only use propane (12V) when a particular demand level is met?

They will work together (same time) to heat the water.

Yes - the will work together if the temp goes down to trigger both ( I do not recall what each is set to ).

One thing to remember - Always turn off the 120V switch when there is even a possibility that you will run "dry". If there is no water in the heater and the 120V is on you run a very good chance of burning out the heating element.
