Sandy - How are you doing now....

We are doing OK here on the Chesapeake Bay. We have a lot of clean up to do and some damage to our heating system due to our basement filling up with water before we could get the generator running to have the sump pump working. We had over 3 feet of water all around our house and had a large tree come down across the parking area for the Bighorn, but it had been moved into Town away from the water and is back home now. We are taking a break from the clean up today and will get back to it tomorrow and hope to see everyone at Willow Tree in a few weeks.

Took a trip to the grocery store this morning and surprisingly enough it was pretty well stocked. Some things were non existent like orange juice. We used our school buses the last two days to take people into their homes in waterfront communities. The drivers had a tough time watching these folks seeing what was left of their homes for the first time. Portable ATM machines, portable shower units, portable Tide laundry units, portable everything cropping up everywhere. Still no access to Long Beach Island and mandatory evacuation orders still in place. "forced" removal of anyone found in the street and use of motorized vehicles is unlawful anywhere on the island. Although our lives have a huge sense of normalcy, there is so much devastation all around us.

Odd - even what does your license plate end with?

Starting at noon today the governor orderd gasoline rationing based on the odd even plate numbers on odd even numbered days.

havent seen that since the late 70's

Of course rules are meant to be broken and when I went up to the parkway tonight for gas the troopers were letting everyone in line get fuel.

Picked up some Cyclone supplies today. Camping World, 2 of those roof vent pillows, thinking we may need the extra insulation. Ought to be easier to keep the trailer heated then 2200 square feet of ranch.

Also got a single burner cooktop so we can cook with gas. Our oven is electric and as good as the Honda 3k is, it can't work a 50 amp oven.

A few "fire starter" blocks and a box of fire logs. After almost 14 years of never using the fire place we may finally need it to take the chill out.

Your news is a day late.

http://media.nj.com/ledgerupdates_impact/other/Executive Order 108 - Gas Rationing.pdf

What is surprising is the order does not affect Ocean county, probably the hardest hit county on the east coast.

Residents of the barrier island had mandatory, escorted evacuation today, given about 5 minutes to gather what they could.

Residents were told it would probably be 8 months before they are allowed back.

I can't imagine what is going through the minds of these folks.

Hey Duane so glad you and Deb are safe. The only thing I can think of is the population could be a factor in the gas odd/even thing. The most populated area of the state is from Monmouth County northward. We are not experiencing the long lines and things that are going on up north.

I guess you are still without power. I think Christy said 1.2 million are still out statewide. Thankfully you can camp out in the yard and remain warm. Call us if you need anything but it seems you are under control.

For those that are hearing that NJ is turning away non-union workers the rumor is FALSE!!!! They are here and doing some really fantastic stuff to help us out.

Alabama Power turned on my power on Weds. , I thanked them for coming up to help.
If anyone needs a parking place for their rig give me a shout, we have enough room to accommodate with power and water. Be safe.

Yesterday was another day at my buddies shop, local TowBoatUS company for the Manasquan area (my part time gig).
We currently are "the" Mantoloking Fire and police department HQ. The shop has an Engine and ladder truck in the bays.
The PD is using the facility for equipment, daily musters and took over my office
Boro hall is operating out of our conference room

About 200 people a day being fed out of the shop.

Two of our guys are living in the storage area above the shop - because hey have no place to live.
The night before one of our office girls told me what her boss had done to have power at her day time job (insurance broker). Didn't sound good.

Having been friends for over 20 years I was really concerned when I found out she was living there because her home ... well she doesn't have one. My electrician buddy and I went over to check it out and were about speechless as to the danger he put my friend in, himself and all the line men trying to restore power! Which BTW, the crews down the road were from Alabama. We had headaches by the time we left I am assuming from the CO. The generators were behindthe office covered with a tarp secured to the porch - guess where all the gen exhaust was going?
I told him a few war stories, which were not old or from a friend of an uncle of someone's neighbor. 4 stories of what happened in the last two days on my fire job. Didn't seem to faze Mr. Insurance guy. My friend moved out to another location and promised me she would not come to work the next without a CO alarm (she did).
My friend above with the insurance agent, her house was "only flooded", but the surge knocked the oil tank over and 200 gallons of oil dumped in the house, with the tide going up and down. Total loss

All day yesterday I watched people come and go as the shop was a muster point for residents of Mantoloking. They were piled into NG 2.5 ton trucks and taken to their homes. They were allowed to bring back whatever they could carry in a couple of bags. They most likely will not get back into their neighborhoods for 7-8 months, as the coast in this area is basically a hazmat waste area and all utilities are comprised. Natural gas has been turned off and is not being repaired. The entire under ground system needs to be replaced, as well as most of the other utilities. And don't forget, the by product of 14,000 residents is sewage.

This storm has certainly different for us. Everyday I talk to another friend.
In the past 10 days friends of ours have had:
No problems
No water for days (us)
No electric for 10 days (us)
Relatively minor damage (us)
Can't find their boat, their boat has sunk, their boat is in their neighbors living room etc
Their house has several $$$ of damage.
Their house has tens of $$$ to over a 100K
Their house has been knocked down or needs to be knocked down.
They cant get to their area to even check on the condition and are trying to look at google earth shots to assess damage.
BTW, satellite pictures are updated daily and and be seen at the link below.
Their house is missing.
Their house burnt down - and they watched helplessly.
It goes on.
Killed by a tree during the height of the storm. Not a friend but someone with a common bond.
And on Monday we buried one of our retired firefighters, dead from CO poisoning from a generator.

This one was different, and today we are prepping for a Nor' easter.

FWIW, the Red Cross makes donating to the relief effort easy by using PayPal. Hang in there, Duane.
