Smell coming out of A/C

Hi Tammie,

Welcome to the posting side of the Heartland Owners Forum.

I'm sure you'll get some suggestions pretty quickly on things to check.

What model/floorplan do you have?

Which A/C?? If it is one in the bedroom, the attic may not be sealed off from the A/C return air. Also, the main A/C may have a poorly sealed or broken seal from the attic.

I sometimes notice the same thing. I'm thinking the air running on high creates negative air pressure in the coach which pulls the stinky air out.

A completely unscientific observation. I bet we very better ideas from the folks here.

I also had a sewer smell coming through the front A/C.My A/C isn't sealed from my attic which may or may not be a good thing. Its good in that the A/C keeps your attic also cool in hot weather. Its not good if you have sewer gas in your attic.I prefer not to have sewer gas in my attic.Sewer gas enters your attic because the vent pipes where they come through the roof are not sealed and the gas backs up into the attic.I removed the three vent covers and sealed the gaps using duct seal. The duct seal never hardens and allows the vent pipes to flex but keeps the smell from the attic.I have never had a sewer smell in the RV since.Hope this helps.

It is also recommended to seal off the attic from the A/C for another reason, if it is not sealed, moisture will migrate through the A/C return duct into the attic and will, in cooler weather, condense on the under side of the roof, drip down into the insulation, through the ceiling making one to believe they have a roof leak, when they have a condensation problem instead.

Why would you operate the A/C in cooler weather?

You don't. If the attic is not sealed off from the A/C, warm moist air rises and will migrate into the attic. The attic has a vent and as said before, the sewer vents are not sealed off to the roof. The A/C does not need to be running to have an air exchange with the attic if it is not sealed off. You can actually feel cool/cold air coming from the return side of the A/C when it is cold outside and you have the heat on.

I'm new @ posting to a thread, hope I'm doing this right. We just purchased a 2011 3185RL. Brought home, cleaning, checking everything out and today we ran the A/C and after a couple of hours went back in and smelled sewer. Looking at other posts, it sounds like the pipe on roof isn't quite high enough? We also noticed when cleaning the roof that one of the vent covers is missing. When we took picture of the vent that the cover is missing from and the black pipe is below the white plastic (this is the one that the cover is missing). Is the pipe supposed to be above the white plastic vent?? We shut the A/C down and just opened the windows and the smell disappeared.

Hi Tiarapursuit,

Welcome to the Heartland Owners Forum and to the family. We have a great bunch of folks here with lots of information and all willing to share their knowledge when needed.

If it is the black tank pipe and it is below the roof level it could be allowing smell into the attic area. The A/C does not draw any outside air into the unit to cool. But you might have air being pulled in from the attic area due to sealing tape missing or coming loose in the A/C intake area. You might drop the a/c filter and even the big cover and check to make sure the intake area is sealed good from the attic. Some of the silver metal duck tape could be loose,,, I found it loose on mine.
