Thumbnails were a bit too fuzzy to see clearly. What time of year are you travelling?

Leaving, heading west on February 28..Following I10 through NM, AZ then north through Phoenix to Las Vegas. From there to California, stopping just utside or a little east of LA.

Hi Frank, Youll love that trip! I-10 from Texas to Los Angeles is a fun route, easy pulls and the weather is great. Im not sure which route you will be taking from Las Vegas but Hwy 93 is not my first choice in the winter time. If you take I-5 up through California youll have some mountains just north of Red Bluff pretty much all the way to to the top of Ashland which is a steep pass. Ashland is at the California/Oregon state line. Oregon is smooth sailing (watch your speed!) Speed limit in California and Oregon is 55mph and they will pull you over, especially if youre hanging out in the left lane. Washington is 60mph and from the Oregon state line to British Columbia is an easy ride as well. We just moved to Georgia from Seattle Washington last year. The whole route you are going is what we have travelled the majority of the time. If you get a chance to stop in Indio, CA there is a nice casino with a huge parking lot and nice fuel islands. If youd like more info on the route just let me know, i dont wanna write a novel unless you want to read it haha. Bon Voyage! Have fun and stay safe.

Most of I-5 in Oregon is now 65mph . As you approach Portland, it drops back to 55mph. Then about 10 miles into Washington, it moves to 70mph.
Youre partly right. California is 55mph when towing, Oregon is 55mph when towing, and Washington is 60mph when towing.

Oregon....Only states you need to be in right lane. I've been through radar traps, towing at 65 in Oregon, never pulled over.

Washington....I see the info "Same as Posted for Trucks". I did not know this...Thanks!! :)
lol All 3 states love out of staters. I got nailed in California for going 65 while towing and i was passing on I-5 southbound in Redding. $800 later the ticket is gone.

$800.00

And here I thought I got ripped off in a Blanco, Texas speed trap for $200.00 . . . :p

Since you are traveling in February, once you leave the coast, you are subject to bad weather with bad roads (snow and ice). Southern Idaho, Wyoming and Colorado could also have strong wing with snow (or without).

You will become one with your weather app. :) I would plan ahead for RV parks where you could wait out storms along your path just in case.

Yeah the ticket was $300, then i hired a lawyer from a billboard for california tickets. Originally was $100 for lawyer but then he kept diming me for more and more and more. Both were ripoffs

I have towed up and down I-5 in CA, OR and WA a lot over the last 10 years, run with the trucks and you are good to go! Just drove home to Washington for Christmas and back to Arizona with a box trailer both directions. Never a problem. Chris

It is true that the official speed limit is 55mph for trucks and cars with trailers. I follow the trucks and most of the time they pass me when I keep it at 60mph. I have never been pulled over doing 60mph while passing a CHP parked on the side of the road or passing me!. If the big rigs are holding to 55mph, I go 55mph because they know when there is aerial surveillance. We had a friend that has moved to Nevada and Mexico, half time in each. She said she pulled her fifth wheel at 75mph all the time and never got stopped. I think she was lucky both in not having a blowout and getting a ticket. Her tires were the OEM rated at 65mph max!

I love to read!.....I am hoping in March weather through to Los Vegas is fine. California, Oregon and Washington to Montana is all in April and May, so I hope to get good clear roads and weather. Thanx for any help....Nervous a bit about the mountains..

This might be true in some states, but in Oregon we have no limited speed restrictions while towing, other than following the posted speed....not the "Truck" speed.

I crossed the Siskiyous a few years back on April 1st, the only day that week that it was not snowing at the summit. Depending on the year the NW mountain passes can still have snowy conditions into April.

Washington studded tire rules Studded tires are only legal Nov. 1 - Mar. 31. Some years they extend the take off to the 3rd week of April. Chris

Watch the weather through all of that route, that time of year in Arizona. Storms can affect SE Arizona with snow/high winds and from north of Phoenix, through Flagstaff and all the way to Las Vegas.

In most cases February and March can be great but we have already had a wet, snowy beginning to this year.

You can hang out in Redding for a few days if needed. Check the road reports. Also know that it is not uncommon to have high wind warnings on the 5 from Weed north to the border.
