Tire Damage

I checked tires and pressures and all was good. 100 miles into the trip had a catastrophic tire failure blowing a large hole in the floor. 280RK Prowler. Looking for recommendations on a facility in south LA/MS. What can I expect for repair, and how big of a deal is this? Thanks.

I'm sorry about your blowout problem. Many have had similar issues. Tire pressure is only one factor that may lead to this situation. Road hazards, age of tire, load, etc., and all could have a factor in the problem. I sure can't estimate the repair cost for such damage, I doubt that anyone on the forum could give you a reasonable estimate. It's just a very unfortunate event.

What are the brand name of the tires you are running on the unit. If 1 blew I would be very cautious of more failures. Allsi how old are the tires.

The other causative factors beside inflation pressure and load are AMBIENT HEAT, and VEHICLE SPEED.

I was driving West on I-80 in Wyoming in 2013 on my way back to California from the Goshen National Rally that year. I always tow at the long time California maximum speed limit for towed vehicles of 55 mph, using my cruise control as much as possible. West of Cheyenne, I had a 5th wheel rig blow past me at about 70 mph. About 5 miles down the road, this rig was pulled over to the right with 2 blown tires on the right side.

Tires are 3 year old Rainer ST. Pulled a lot of heavy trailers and goosenecks and never had a tire blow like this but those are also 14 ply. All very good points, it wasn’t overly warm out less than 80 and cruise control was set at 62 mph in the right line. Will definitely be getting a full new set of tires.

Buy Goodyear Endurance if you are going with ST tires. Depending on your size of tire., you maybe able to go to a LT . I have 16 inch on my Bighorn so I run Michelin XPS Radials.

Thanks for the suggestion, I’ll look into those for sure. Trailer gets dropped off at the dealer Thursday for repair estimate.

BTW, if you don't already have one, a TPMS radio link tire pressure and temperature monitoring system can help prevent tire blowouts with its audible alarms.

It saved me a long time ago in Idaho on my way from Northern California to Yellowstone when the large nipple enclosure mounting the wheel bearing on 1 brake drum cracked (maybe going over frequent railroad tracks on non-freeway streets in the area), causing the trailer wheel to rub on the frame and start leaking down. The alarm went off, I pulled over to the side of the freeway, strong rubber burning smell, got to the next offramp, spent 8 hours at the side of the road with 2 roadside servicers coming out to get it fixed.

IMO. When you have your coach looked at get them to check the tracking looked at, on my old coach after the second blow out I had a hanger re welded to put the axle in line,could be trying to turn the corner down the road, just a thought.
