My trailer was designed to be pulled by a 1/2 ton truck but after pulling several times with my 05 1500 crew z71 I was not happy with the way it pulled so i upgraded to a 2500 diesel. It will probably depend more on how you like to pull than on the ability of the truck to pull in some cases.

My 2012 F150 EcoBoost 3.73 gears tow max is 11,000ish. My 261 well loaded is 9600lbs. Up the Coquilhalla Pass doing 80km/hr in 3rd gear with more to spare! Booya! Click on my pic.

You mentioned MPG. My 2011 Chevy dually diesel gets about 11-12MPG towing my 38FT Bighorn and about 17-18MPG empty on the hi-way. I am not sure what Fords new diesel is getting-someone else I am sure will chime in on MPG. The Chevy ride is excellent.
