UV Tire Covers

I've searched the various areas and cannot find anything on a discussion about tire covers?? Are they really helpful to prevent UV damage to tires or do they typically wear out before they UV rot?? I'm talking about the higher end tires, not the China bombs.

Saw an RV recently where someone had just taken pieces of that window shade or patio covering, cut out squares large enough to cover the entire wheel well and mounted fasteners to tie them down, along with a piece of flat steel bar stock to hold down the bottom of the cover.

Just wondering if it another area of concern I should have. I'm not full timing and store my BH in a covered barn so just wondering if they are necessary or just another highway for insects to climb aboard???

I keep mine in a covered structure (garage) and I don't put tire covers on my Bighorn 3270RS. I live in a desert town and I think that as long as you keep it out of direct sunlight, you should be fine. I do cover the tires to my utility trailer because it sits right in the sun and the tires were starting to show some sun damage. I do put tire shine on my tires to keep them moist though. We do, however, take our trailer out once a month or two.

I use them on the sun side when we are in Florida parked for 4 months.Probably not necessary but see other people doing it.
I think most tires will time out before they are affected by UV rays.

UV rays are a tires worst enemy, especially for tires that are not rolling, cleaned and sealed very often. We keep ours covered after we seal them with tire sealant from the auto store. Got the covers from CW

The Goodyear tire web site does point out the harmful effects of UV Rays from the sun. Cleaning regularly is suggested. It also says that tire cleaners and coatings can be harmful if they contain alcohol and petroleum products.

The site paleclaire posted is an excellent resource. Roger Marble is a retired tire engineer and is wealth of knowledge.

BTW....I cover my tires when in storage.

I once saw a nicely decorated set of tire covers made of plywood. They were cut to the same radius as the fender flares on the rig, and totally shaded the tires.

I cover the sun side of the Cyclone and motorcycle trailer while they are not used.
And the UV tire covers I use are not UV protected themselves apparently. Both covers have deteriorated to the point of needing replacement. One black, one white, same deterioration.
