vanishing hot water

We have a 2014 Gateway 3500 RE and yesterday we ran out of propane. I disconnected the tank and had it refilled. After ensuring all lines were reconnected and valves turned back on. 7 hours later I showered with fading hot water. 3 hours later my wife showers and all hot water is gone half way thru her shower. Now there is NO hot water and the red light above the on off 12V switch is red for 30 seconds then turns off. Sounds like its on but its not putting out any hot water. Any ideas?
Thanks,

Sounds like you may still have air in the propane line. Turn on the stove and let it run for a minute or two. You might see the burner even go off on the stove. Then try the water heater again. If your stove acts funny, like no flame or very low,,, turn off the propane valve and bleed pressure from line. Then reopen the propane tank valve verrrry sllooow... the tanks have a auto cutoff safety valve built in to stop flow of propane incase of broken line or accident.

Let us know what you find.

First off, do you have one or two propane tanks? Did the automatic transfer regulator switch to the other tank when the first one went empty? Did you have the second tank turned on? After reconnecting, did you switch back to the newly filled tank and not run a stove burner to clear air from the lines? How fast did you open the tank valve? Too fast and sometimes the check valve will close it off.

Now, the little red LED for the 12V water heater switch. When you turn it ON, does the LED light up and then go off? Do you hear the burner ignite, or does the light come back on? If there's a problem with ignition, it will cycle through that three times and then the LED remains lit, indicating the system is in LOCK-OUT. Turn off the switch for 5 minutes and try again. You might go to the face of the water heater and try pressing the rubber reset buttons. Possible the 12V Hi-Limit switch tripped (for whatever reason) and needs to be reset.

You say you can hear it, but did you go out to the water heater, remove the cover, and look at the burner tube? If it's running, you'll see the flame, as well as hear it.

Do you have shore power available? If so, use the 120V heating system. Unless you have an Atwood water heater that only runs on propane, like my friend's SoB rig has (?).

Did you perge all the air out of the propane lines? Have you tried lighting the stove to perge the air? Turn the 12V switch off for a few minutes so it can reset. After 3 times of not lighting....it will go to a lock out mode. If you are connected to shore power. Use the 110V water heater switch to heat the water. BTW, the propane and 110V can be used at the same time for faster hot water recovery.
