I'm pretty much on the Bobcat method as well. I use the monitor panel to see if I have any fresh water for my trip as I keep maybe a 1/4 tank to use for the toilet and sink for travel days.
Never had the black tank full, full but have had standing water in the shower in the past.
I rarely hook up sewer at a CG until the day I leave. If I was there only a day or two, I dump at my next CG on the last day. Of course, if my stays are long, I won't make it until leave day and hook up sewer as needed.
