Your welcome home light should come on when you open the door. It is also turned on with the switch that you have already found out that it works.
There could be one or more reasons that the light does not come on when you open the door.
I believe that there is a magnet under the door and a receiver switch under the threshold. It may need an adjustment.
There is also a control module, probably located behind the fire extinguisher located next to the door. It may be faulty.
