ready and we’re ready to hit the road. There is one big thing to remember as we’re hitting the road every year. That is that Drunk Driving kills. We need to remember that we are the people who can stop Drunk Drivers. We can stop by saying no you can’t drive and by calling 911 to inform them about the suspected drunk driver. Keep calling them and tell them your observations.

Our story started 5 years ago. Our daughter Jennifer was attending Mesa State College in Grand Junction CO. She turned 19 years old. Jenn and Jake went out to dinner and a movie on March 22, 2007. I was worrying about her and had trouble falling asleep. At 2 o’clock in the morning on March 23, 2007, there were two police officers pounding on our door waking us up. They asked if we had a daughter named Jennifer. I told them yes. They asked to come in and for us to sit down. They said well it’s not good news, there had been an accident. They said that Jennifer had been killed along with her 19 year old boyfriend. That was a crushing blow.

Patrick Strawmatt was charged with DUI, 2 first degree murder charges with reckless disregard for life. He is now serving the longest sentence ever giving out in Colorado for a DUI resulting in death.

On the north side of I-70 just after mile marker 35 you will see the reminder. You will see two Crosses standing together. One is red for Jake that was his favorite color. One is purple for Jennifer that was her favorite color.

Remember it’s up to us to help stop Drunk Driving. When you see it report it!

All of the first responders were heartbroken. They had a real hard time knowing what they know and seeing them. There was an RN who was going east bound. She pulled over to render aid. She knew my daughter was in extreme shape. She was heartbroken when she came to the conclusion that Jenn couldn't be saved, but she still tried and stayed with her. The Colorado State Patrol did what they could do. The paramedics and firemen gave it all that they could. We say thank you to all of them every year when we go to Grand Junction.

I can tell you that a DWI accident I responded to 25 years ago (FD) changed my views of drinking and driving forever.

I have also investigated fatal traffic collisions involving a drunk driver. I have also been the one to deliver the message to the victims loved ones that they died in the collision. My condolences to Peter and Liane.

Recently here in Idaho a recent graduate of our local high school was texting on her smart phone and rear-ended a slow moving tanker truck. The Idaho State Police estimated her speed at 80+ MPH at the moment of impact. She was DOA. Just like Peter and Liane speaking out about drunk driving the parents took the high road to begin a campaign to have laws inacted about texting while driving.

My cousin was the passenger in a head-on collision with a drunk driver in 2004. She was severely injured, but her friend,Carol who was driving, died shortly after the crash. The drunk driver got 10years probation.

Every time I hear about a drunk driving crash on tv, I remind my friends on facebook that whatever the circumstances, if you are drinking, DO NOT DRIVE. Call me, I'll come get you. No matter when or where.

I have a sticker on the back of the rig that says "Don't Drink and Drive" courtesy of MADD. Since we are always going slower than most traffic, I'm sure lots of people see it.

We are so sorry to hear about your loss. DWI, DUI, or whatever it is called is a preventable situation. Those who chose to drink and drive are not doing the responsible thing. And texting while driving or distracted driving is sad too. One thing that has not been mentioned is Police Officers who type on their MDT (mobile digital terminal) or in car computers while they are driving. Talk about distracted driving, try talking on the radio, typing on the MDT and responding to an emergency call dodging non-responsive drivers. Wow.

Dear Peter and Liane, I too understanding your feeling of loss. I lost my beloved daughter, Crista Michelle Cuzzourt, to a drunk driver. March 30th 2000.There is nothing that can be said or expressed to expain the devistation and the pain that a parent feels when their child dies from a preventable event. I continue to fight the fight against drunk drivers. I have one other child and he suffered the loss of not only his sister that night but also his mother. Drunk drivers should be warned that I as well as the rest of parents that have lost their loved ones, will continue to report ALL suspicious drivers. The driver that killed my daughter and her mother was a young 22 years old and a new father. This was not his first DUI. Now he is serving 15years without parole. My heart is saddened not only for my loss of my daughter, but for the young child that has to live without his father all because he choose to drink and drive.

I was a "life flight" pilot for Eastern Idaho Regional Medical Center and will tell you that 65% of all of the most horrible accidents I flew the medical crew into were caused by a drunk driver......................you really don't want to know what I think they should be sentenced to!!!

That had to be it. I will never understand how they can kill someone and get so little. He should have gotten more than probation and time served. The drunk driver that killed my daughter and her boyfriend what will amount to life. He will be able to ask for parole when he turns 95. He has 46 more years before he will be eligible for parole. They always say that its and accident. But it's not an accident if you have to choice not to drive. We are trying to get a law passed that says if you run from the police you have turned you vehicle into a weapon. This way they are not protected be the vehicular laws once you have turned you vehicle into a weapon.

Everyone has the choice to drink and to drive. But its a choice, if you choose to put someones life at risk then you need to pay for that choice.
