What Hitch Do They Need

Our son is in the process of purchasing a small hybrid travel trailer with a gross weight of 4500# and a tongue weight of 625#. His tow vehicle is a Nissan Armada SUV 4x4 with a curb weight of about 5800#, so he shouldn't have any problems towing a trailer of this size. The question is will he really need an equalizer hitch, or can he get by with just a tow bar in his receiver. My gut feeling is that he can, but for those out there with more knowledge, what are your thoughts.

I had a similar sized crossover with a large tent trailer and I was half the tongue weight. Around 300lb TW and it squatted close to 2 inches. If I kept it I would've gotten a WD hitch. A hybrid will have a larger frontal area as well so I would think a WD with sway control would be necessary. Just my pair of pennies.

I woould suggest using an EQ Hitch and anti-sway. The hitch weight is over the capacity of most 2" receiver hitches. There should be a label on the hitch and I'd guess it has a 500# capacity when not using an EQ Hitch.

By all means I would say he should use a WD hitch. My Edge M21 had a gross weight of 4600 pounds and the dealer strongly recommended using it because without it I could experience sway because the trailer was so light. He sold me an EZ-Lift WD Hitch at his cost and with it installed you often had to check to make sure the trailer was there because it was such a nice tow. I then used the same hitch on my heavier North Trail. If he does get a WD hitch, the height of the ball in relation to the tongue's ball cup is critical so make sure he reads the manufacturer's instructions and recommendations. BTW I was pulling the Edge with an F150 2 x 4.

We towed a 21' Hybrid trailer for 4 years with a Dodge Dakota quad cab equipped with the V8 engine. 4800lb gross weight. We used a Valley round bar weight distribution hitch. No sway control. We did not encounter any issues at all. A really nice combo. Towed great.
