Pacific Region Travel Discussion to Gillette WY-National Rally

Okay, tonight we're sitting down with laptop and starting to plan the Gillette trip from the Los Angeles area. We are thinking of driving through Las Vegas and stay the first night in Cedar City. One more stop before Gillette, maybe Salt Lake City or a bit beyond. Anyone else planning this?

Also, we are thinking of going up to Glacier National Park after, but we loved the Grand Teton area last summer (so beautiful), so we want to do that again too, before Glacier. Anyone?

Cedar City works for us. We will be in Hurricane and Kanab for the month of May.
For the most part, I think I would rather do most sight seeing after the rally, if possible.

I would like to arrive in Gillette the weekend before the rally, if possible,as JB sort of recommended. Trace

We think we're going to plan on a stop in Cedar City. But I think you will be getting to the rally before us. We're were thinking two stops (overnights) getting there and maybe arriving at the rally on Tuesday (6/12) or Wednesday (6/13).

We're thinking of second stop being past Salt Lake City. Checking RV Park Reviews, Fort Bridger, WY and Lyman, WY have a couple of decent campgrounds.

Since were just starting to plan the trip, everything is pretty fluid right now. Hubby came home and said we have to go to Zion (never been there), and maybe Bryce too. So I guess we'll do that for a few days before heading up to Gillette. Looking at Zion National Park RV Park on the web, looks awesome.

Ziggy, We will be coming up from Colorado Springs on our way to Gillette. Plan on spending the entire week. We want to be located with all the other PNW'rs so put us on whatever list you are keeping. d&j

I haven't started keeping a list yet. Maybe I can do that after registration when we know who is going and who wants to stay in the same area. I know Jim will need that info from me and he will do what he can to accommodate us.

I agree on the Salt Lake city. Its a pretty good haul from Socal to there....8-10 hrs. Its not far from there to I-80. Hang a right turn and HIT it. I prefer 62 MPH.....best pulling power and MPG.

I agree with Bob. 62mph is about right for me towing. After I leave California I don't have to look over my shoulder to go 62 either. Trace

We stay in the Kanab area in the summer. (Which is 30 mins from Zion) We will be there in May, leaving in June and then to Yellowstone after the rally, then back to Hurricane/Kanab afterwards.
We would like to travel with others from the west, if possible.
I think, as JB said it would be a good idea to get there a bit early and get settled.
Therefore we signed up to arrive in Gillette on Saturday June 9th. I guess that could be adjusted a day, here or there, to meet up with others from the left coast chapters. Trace

Hi, Anyone going to Yellowstone or the Tetons after the rally might apply for the Golden Age Pass, its a simple form to fill out (just google it), a copy of your drivers license and $20. I was told if you get it at one of the parks they charge you more. You have to be 62 years old or older. You just buy this one time and you are good for life.

Actually, I believe it's still only $10 if you buy it at the park. The website link I just found indicates that it's $20 if they mail it to you ($10 for a processing fee). Here's the link to check out. http://store.usgs.gov/pass/senior.html "Senior Pass

Boy it must have changed. 4 years ago it $25 at Zion and $25 at the North Rim. But then the pass was good for a year for free entrance at any National Park.

Ross bought his Senior Pass (it was called "Golden Age pass" then) 5 yrs ago when he turned 62 for $10 at the entrance to a Nat'l Park. I'm not sure how we knew about it, but we just had to ask for it, pay the $10 and we had it on the spot. You can buy one at any Nat'l Park entrance or Monument etc where a fee is required. It's a tremendous savings. Ross always carries it in his wallet. I should probably laminate it as it's good for a lifetime. He just always has to show his ID when using it.
