I guess the failure of the leaf springs is due to the initial decision to use undersized springs. I hope Heartland and Lippert has recognized the issue have decided to rectifify the problem by using heavier springs and suspension. Is 4,000 lb leaf springs the answer? What about the...
Here's another question.
We have had Goodyear G 614 tires on our camper for the past 2 1/2 years. How do you know when your tires need replacing? Is it just a set time period before you replace them like changing your oil evey 5000 miles? Or the old Lincoln penny in the groove test? If i...
Does everyone keep their tires at the max psi when they first start out? That psi is going to go up quite a bit after traveling 6 - 8 hours at a stretch in the hot weather. Won't this high psi lead to a possible blowout? Why does leaving your tires 5 psi below the max psi increase the...
Should we be reducing our tire pressure on our camper and TV during the hot summer months?
If the recommended max cold tire pressure is 110 psi on the camper and 80 on the TV, should we reduce this to lets say 100 psi and 75 psi during July and August?
Thanks Jim,
Just tested the furnace/air conditioner thermostat and all is well. Also the ceiling fan thermostat which is also working properly. It appears our BigHorn electrical system can withstand 24 volts for at least a few minutes. So far so good. Just a few light bulbs needed to be replaced.
CS,
Looks like the converter and refrigerator are working fine. The fridge switches back and forth from AC to gas without a problem. Looks like the converter has a built in saftey feature that protects it from downstream mistakes like the one I made. I still can't believe I forgot I originall...
John,
Is there a possibility I might have damaged the converter? What's the best way to make sure it wasn't damaged when I hooked up the two 12 volt batteries in series.
I can't believe how dumb I feel. Now I realise that I replaced the two original 6 volt baterries with two 12 volt batteries . Even the guys at Sears didn't notice that the original batteries were 6 volt each. I copied the original hookup so I was actually hooking them up in series and getting...
Has anyone experienced blowing their wall fixture lightbulbs after replacing your RV batteries. We have two 12 deep cycle batteries connected parallel. I just replaced them and now the small bulbs in the wall fixtures are blowing. The ceiling lights are much brighter than before and are holding up.
ny rally
We have plans to see the Grand canyon in July, but we hope to be back in time to make the Verona rally. We have been to Turning Stone several times and have found it very nice.
Fireplace
Dale and Jen,
Our Desk top does get warm but never so hot as to have me believe it would go on fire. We have been using it for two winters without a problem. I would like to hear from Heartland factory and the manufacturer as to whether there has been instances of fire caused by...
B & W hitch
I have found, if you don't loosen the bolts you can't pull the release pin located in my wheel well. I supposed the hitch is snugged down so much by the down bolt and the u bolts, that it makes it very hard to release the pin that holds the post down in the truck. If your not...
B & W hitch
TX Bobcat,
Do you think the problem might be caused by not taking care of the down bolt on top of the post before tightening or loosening the nuts on the u bolts?
B & W hitch
TX Bobcat,
I haven't had problems while tightening the coupler onto the post with the two u bolts. You might want to bring this to the attention of B & W. They appear to be interested in making sure their product continues to operate properly.
B & W hitch
Paul,
To tell you the truth, one of the handles that locks the coupler onto the pedestal became bent. We don't know how this happened so we wanted B & W's technician to take a look at it and possibly replace the handle. Otherwise we were satisfied with the coupler and pedestal...
Just wanted everyone to know that after two years of use we sent our coupler back to B & W for routine maintenance. We were really surprised when B & W sent us a whole new coupler. They even paid for the shipping. Thank you Gregg Lafferty at B & W.
Dodge 3500 DRW
We have been towing our BH for 2 seasons and I feel very comfortable recommending our truck to anyone. We have the 4 X 4 which we have used on the beach and on wet pavement. The Dual rear wheels have provided us good stability and our Cummins 5.7 liter engine has handled our...
Jim,
My PacBrake dealer installed our air inlet remote on the back firewall in the engine compartment. Most of the time it works great. The PacBrake compressor has cut out on occassion when it became too hot. I need to relocate the remote inlet behind the fan like yours. How did you mount it...
sheared pins
After listening to all you people I have to go back to my original feeling that they didn't handle our BH properly. Hopefully the BH took care of itself and didn't sustain any more damage than a few foot pad spring loaded pins. I asked the service center that dropped our camper...
I can understand everyone's skepticism. It was very hard for me to believe that they both gave way. However I spoke with the technician and he said the pins were all the way in. It was standing in the servicing area. They were in the process of putting supporting jacks in place. It just...
I brought our BigHorn in for servicing last week. I coudn't believe while in the shop both landing gear pins sheared off. Luckily the pins were in the first hole so our BH only fell about an inch with no apparant damage and the worker servicing our camper was not hurt. How often should these...
Lube Maintenance
Thanks for all your suggestions regarding lubrication of the BigHorn. I forgot to mention that since I was having the bearings and electric brakes checked I might as well rotate the tires.
extended warranty
Squaredancers,
We bought the Choice plan from our dealer at the same time we picked up our 3670RL for around $1,500. Granted this was 2 years ago and prices may have gone up.
converter
I spoke with Progressive Dynamics the people who manufacture my converter. They say the converter has blocking diodes that protect the converter when charging the bateries with a charger or any other charging device such as a solar panel.
That's what I found works best for us. I don't rely on the trickle charge from the converter. I hook up a 10 volt battery charger off of the the generator to charge the batteries and of course I check the fluid level and the batteries to make sure they can still hold a charge.
Sometimes we overfill our fresh water tank and the water is forced out the fresh water tank air vents onto the belly cover. Most of it comes out onto the ground except for a little that comes out after you start moving the camper. In any event, no harm done. Theres nothing under there that can...
satellight
Just curious Alan. We have the Kingdome on our camper and like yourselves we find the portable dish more reliable in campgrounds with trees than the Kingdome. Question. When using your portable dish, how do you hook up your bedroom Television to the portable dish? The connection...
new mattress
Have you looked into the foam toppers. If I remember right the california king fit our big horn. You can also shave them down if necessary. overstock.com has them.
